Always loved the sands at Ballathie but to be honest potshot and cradle are equally as productive for me. My dad back in the 80s fished ballathie for a few weeks every year and routinely caught 7 to 10 fish a day on the old red dye shrimp. Hoping to get a day on the Tay next Month. Tight lines!

Bring the Fish to the net not the net to the fish

ive often worried about that exact thing happening, I use a 1950's JW Young Beaudex and the sides of the reel seat are sharp edged and the running line loops back and snaps against it on the cast, I think I'll pull it off and give it a touch of the polishing wheel and round those edges down.

That looked a decent fish that caused the line malfunction, Ian. Oh well, i don't feel quite so bad after losing what would have been my first salmon from the Clyde this year, earlier today, never mind, there's always tomorrow.

Hey Iain, love your videos as usual. I was actually thinking of fishing Meikleour and Upper Islamouth this week coming, hoping to take advantage of the bump in water levels. I get the sense that it’s more of a spinning beat though and I’m keen to fish the fly only. Is that right? Otherwise I was thinking about Kercock which looks like better fly water. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A nice wee juicy dry fly might, just might have done the business. They were certainly coming up, and the switch you were using would have been ideal for the job. Small and light can be a good option in these conditions ....my tactic but with fishing it's trial and error, which you know only too well Iain I'm sure. Always enjoy your outings and vids 😎🍺

The pools you were fishing are called Flats , Concretes , Chapmans and the pipe pool in order going down the river. Chapmans so called because Alan Chapman form the the farm used to walk across the field and pull out dozens of fish back in the day . The Eright is a spate river so you got it on a good day when the fish were running fast , it is better the next day when it has dropped a few more inches and the fish slow down . You can use lighter gear and smaller flies then and simple patterns , yellow and red or cascades work . Today I fished it on 5 inches water but nothing showing . We had a good run of grilse 10 days ago . Good vid tho .

When seeing the fish jumping out the water i thought this is the day, very frustrating watching them and trying everything in your box to land one, that’s fishing, still it was dry and looked very peaceful on the water, next time little fish bite Iain’s fly . Take care 🥃

Seems to be the way when you see lots of fish you don't seem to get one then when you see none you catch them. I've had it a few times on the Findhorn. Looks a lovely stretch to fish. Tight lines for the next trip. Hopefully I'll get a cast on the Tweed at some point this year.

You'll need to put a "wee something" on your fly Iain. Have you tried those magnetic trebles? Here's a fly, "The Top Secret." Size 8 single, black body with one turn of flat gold in the middle. Black hackle, very sparse stoat's tail wing. You'll need a baseball bat to keep the fish off it.

Expertly fished Iain, at least that take and some good fish showing mean that hope springs eternal in the salmon anglers breast!! Lovely water, tight lines soon I hope!!,cheers Peter. Good off roading skills too may I say.🤗
