Very pretty! I wonder if the reason for their hardness is cultural? Like, maybe a special japanese pencil or art technique? I feel like they could also be good for writing letters or something. They'd certainly be hardy in a classroom!

I appreciate your review. I was so attracted to the colors in the Irojiten sets and bought all of them. I tried to make them work, but they were just too hard for me. Hard, scratchy, and hardly any color saturation meant I ended up gifting them to my niece. I don’t regret that choice. They were not the pencils for me.

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes I know just what you mean, it’s such a shame really, as they are just beautiful pencils! Another commenter mentioned that the way the intended blending works is by using very similar shades and going from light to dark. Im hoping to do an artwork with them at some point soon just to see if I can make it work this way. 🤷‍♀️

I really like their lightest (pastel) pencils to use in combination with other brands in my mixed media pieces - possibly because of their hardness, they deliver a light colour no other brand I own really gets (when used at higher pressure). Also because of this, I like using them as 'blending' pencils in combination with my Polychromos. But I have to admit, I haven't used the more 'vibrant' hues in the pack as much, because for those colours, other brands are just better.

I bought these pencils years ago and never used them past swatching them because I hated them so much. Besides the blending issues, they are so hard and scratchy. So if you like hard and scratchy consistency pencils, I would recommend them. If you like a creamier softer core, you will hate these like I did and I would recommend POSCA or Prismacolor pencils instead. I also really love my Holbein pencils, but those are incredibly pricey and if you sell your art, Holbein has questionable light fastness. I just use them in my sketchbook so light fastness doesn't matter to me. I really wanted to love the Irojiten pencils though so it was such a disappointment when I tried them out and they were so hard, scratchy and difficult to blend and layer.

What would be a better substrate to mix with musou? alcohol could be an alternate as it could hydrate more than distilled water could. Also would a primed and scuffed surface provide better adhesion while getting more outputs from the bottle?

The Tombow watercolor markers also come in Kits and individually. The kits are purposed for a style, look, mood, of painting (like your painting of death). The lack of reds and browns is to restrict those colors in the creation of a picture to stay true to the look, however there are blending techniques to get around that, which I am certain they had in mind as well. Tombow colors do have a lot of similar colors, it’s relating to the style of kits, however the similar colors do blend significantly differently. With Tombow colors I put the light color down first, then blend over with the darker colors. It looks to me Tombow applied the same color schemes with their pencils as they did with there markers. Looking like a traditional Oriental style art supply I’m assuming the color pencil style of painting it is designed for light application to begin with then layer in the dark patches. The watercolor marker kits seem designed for western watercolor painting. I find the Tombow brand to be a lot like Faber-Castle, hit or miss.

I personally love these pencils, even if admittedly they are very hard. Up until 2024 before the expansion of the Chromaflow line, they were Derwent’s line with most hues (126), though unfortunately the only 120 set comes in a wooden box, and there is a separate six set for shades of black and white (whose body is not green but black). So you have to go through hurdles to get the full range. It also seems like Derwent is slowly phasing them out, as you can rarely find them open stock in most outlets.
@StuffBySunshine
@StuffBySunshine 4 күн бұрын
Yeah, I’ve heard they are phasing them out. Apparently the pro color is a mix of the artist pencils and a new blend. I’ve got them lined up to check out in the future so stand by ☺️
@vilvile
@vilvile 3 күн бұрын
@@StuffBySunshine you will find the pro color not super saturated and on the hard side too. They are meant to be reliable for artists that scan their work since they don’t produce much glare. Something you may find interesting is to compare the vintage Artists (which have their bodies made in a single color) or the vintage Studio. They are much softer and nicer.
@StuffBySunshine
@StuffBySunshine 3 күн бұрын
Interesting! I’m just going on what info Derwent has been able to provide about the Procolor so yeah I’ll be sure to compare to the artists. Are the studio and artists different? I was under the impression the studio was just a slimmer barrel but same core mix?
@vilvile
@vilvile 3 күн бұрын
@@StuffBySunshine you are absolutely right. The current Studios are a slimmer and hexagonal barrel version of the Artists (and also, I don’t think the Studios have 120 shades, but I may be wrong on this one). However, if you can get your hands on the older studios (they have black barrels and dipped ends), they are way softer and nicer. They made 72 of these shades. It’s more likely you find them under the Rexel Derwent name.

I own the limited edition Landscape set of 24 that came in a wrap case. The case design is almost like a fabric version of the dictionary book and was my reason for buying it. At first, I didn’t love the pencils because of how hard they were, but I was always drawn to play around with them simply because they are so gorgeous and feel nice in the hand. After a lot of trial and error, I’ve found the papers that they perform best on, and I’ve started to really enjoy them, especially as a travel set for urban sketching. If you own these pencils, try using them on Midori MD Cotton paper and you might enjoy using them more. That paper works well with even the cheapest, hardest leads.

I got the full set at a really great price (a third of their usual price) but they were still quite expensive, so I was really disappointed the first time I tried them. I had decided I would resell them, but then I talked myself into testing them once more before parting with them and suddenly things clicked and I really loved them. You have to put them down in quite small, delicate motions, and build them up layer after layer. It takes longer to do than with creamier pencils but the results are beautiful and can get quite saturated. Now I love them and would never part with them. For me the only negative is the lack of lightfastness. But they are a pleasure to use in my sketchbooks
@gertietheduck
@gertietheduck 4 күн бұрын
I do think that at full price they are quite overpriced here, though (I often see these in shops for £69 per volume!) . In Japan these sell for around £15 per volume, which I think is a fairer price taking into account the lack of lightfastness and how they handle. They are gorgeous though - very interesting pencils. I am happy I kept them. I also love the unusual colour range, but I do have other (artist) pencil collections.

Oof that’s a big price difference! Maybe that’s where the Amazon ones are coming from as they are so much cheaper than I’ve been able to find in stores. @gertietheduck
@gertietheduck 4 күн бұрын
@@StuffBySunshine I have not done any lightfastness tests myself (I decided not to bother because I have other fully lightfast artist-grade sets that I would go to first for any professional artwork) but there are quite a few others online who have (can't link on here unfortunately, but they are easy to find). The biggest gripe is that the pencils are sold in art shops but do not carry lightfastness ratings, which would be helpful. Not all of them are fugitive but quite a lot are, particularly the paler colours, of which there are many this being a Japanese set with a Japanese colour palette. I think perhaps in Japan these are aimed at a different market, hence why no lightfastness info. But at the prices they are sold elsewhere it would be nice info to have before making a purchase.

I had a feeling these would end up being a middling pencil when you started testing these - not because they're bad, but because I think they fill a little bit of a niche that most other pencils don't do. While I probably wouldn't reach for these to do an art piece, they have been working wonderfully in one of my colouring books (Hanna Karlzon's Daydreams) and I feel like the intention is to use a couple of sets together. It does require buying more than one of the assortments, but I feel like you're _meant_ to use the pale tones 1 and 2 together same with the dull tones 1 and 2, and then the others fill in gaps to allow for gradients within the colour families. Working outside of the colour families is a lot more tricky, so I agree with you in that these seem to be "colouring book" pencils as you can create some nice blends so long as you keep to that rule of using most colours from the same set type, but for more specific works where you want (and _need_) to create those gradients from different families, there are many other options around
@StuffBySunshine
@StuffBySunshine 4 күн бұрын
Okay that’s really interesting. How many sets are you using for your colouring? If you know you really really want them (I did because I absolutely love Japanese colour palettes) and your heart is set on the entire set, you could order them from Japan directly? The shipping costs are high but if you get the whole lot (and make sure you don;t add anything to your order that would make it go over the customs limit of £135 including shipping) it's quite the saving! I paid £45 for the 3-volumes lot, plus shipping. I don't do this kind of thing much as I like to support my local art shops (and my most local art shop is...the brick and mortar Jacksons flagship, haha) but the price of this particular set of pencils here in the UK (and in some other European countries I have family in) is astronomical (I sincerely don't know why) and considering these pencils' limitations for this one thing it's worth getting a Japanese friend to bring these back for you, or to order them direct. You can then replenish individual pencils as you run out from your local shops (that's what I have been doing).

I’ve heard that! Strange it doesn’t come with a set though. When I do the pastels I’ll make sure I add it ☺️

I find that Derwent Lightfast does brilliantly in the really dark and really light colours - and with the whole 100 set it really shines with its vast range of values, but the set of 36 is definitely a curious choice and indeed consists of LF1 rated pencils and honestly there was no good mid-value green you could have chosen. Spruce green and Forest are similarly dark, and Mallard Green is turquoise. Mid Ultramarine is the same, no good mid-value blue to choose from With the full 100, or even the 72 set, Vivid Green and Denim would have been good options but naturally that wasn't possible here; and going down to 48 would mean swapping Vivid Green for Grass Green but still allow for nice mid-value colours. Curious as to your thoughts on the Tombow Irojiten as I just bought those myself, and wondering if Caran D'ache Luminance will ever get a look-in, expensive as those are

I’m doing an art piece at the moment with them and really enjoying them more than I thought I would. Although to get it to work it took a bit of thinking what to do with that color range 😂. Oh whew I almost reshot the whole thing because it was so dark, glad it just wasn’t my poor choice. I think you’re going to like (or you may hate)the tombow episode, not giving anything away but the tests surprised me quite a bit. Unfortunately I’ve been sick this week so I’m still working on it and it’ll be out either at the end of next week or the following week Monday sorry for the wait

Oh yes and the Caran D’ache luminance are def on the list! I’m paying for all the pencils so I generally do only one or two expensive pencils each round and this ones was the lightfast and the (upcoming) procolor. Next round!☺️

Hii, Nice review! Well done! I also have this koh i noor progresso and i also might do a review about them sooner or later. From now i am still having fun using them and testing in Multiple ways.I bought them in a trip to Croatia and there they were surprisingly cheap for their quality. Your review is technical, you actually Talk about the most important topics we should consider when chosing a pencil color. Very complete, well done for that! I would add something to this review, once on my tests i am not that technical- testing them in a colorful paper (example Kraft). They are truly amazing and actually pop comparatively to other pencil colors. I think their potencial is in this and in the fact that the pencil is woodless (and you can use similarly to pastels or charcoal ) - i think you referred this last One. The way they blend, is different from other brands - for example, in the case of caran d'ache luminance or on the case of bruynzeel, the colors really blend and transform In other color - you really get green from mixing blue with Yellow. With progresso blending is not that smooth, but it works somehow. I really love to work with them - a thing that i dont like that much in them is the color selection - i would expect to have more difference between the light blue/green to the dark blue/green. But white helps a lot getting different Shades. They are amazing! Try them on different paper 🙂

Thankyou! I’m glad you enjoyed it ☺️. Yes it is a shame they don’t have more colours available, a bit of variation would be great but I guess that’s the trade off we have for such a small kit

For some *really* strange and niche Koh-i-Noor pencils, try the Tri-Tone (wood pencils) or "Magic" (both wood and woodless pencils in several formats) line: they're pencils with a mix of 3 colours in each pencil so as you lay colour it keeps changing. Some of the mixes are less surprising like lighter to darker greens or blues, some other mixes are more exotic like red-purple-black or grey-orange-red.
