I am 42 years young and just returned to drumming from where I left it at 25 years of age. I had professionally taught lessons for 3 months until my teacher said I'm ready to fly on my own. Not long after that I formed a 3 man thrash and Punk band. I'm sure alot of people will flame me for my comment, but I am not phased as it's a true statement. The majority of drummers and musicians on KZfaq Facebook Twitter etc etc etc are all ego driven, not all but ALOT. Its kinda like a my di**s bigger competition now and like whos the best and if you cant play 250>300bpm you are trash.I'm playing black metal with punk on the side now and am happy at my 220 bpm. I grew up learning, doing it for myself but I see now that it's oh man I wanna be faster or better then him or her etc etc and that's not doing it for one's self or own enjoyment it's all about bragging and ego. Alot of people loose sight of the first golden rule, do it for yourself, and don't worry or listen to what anyone else is doing. People don't do this and that's why a majority of music today is crap or sounds like you've heard it before, because you have. Originality has gone and everyone tries to sound like someone else who already made a name for them self. It's not a race it's about having fun and learning no matter your age we never know it all.. Enjoy...

I think the song Pneuma by Tool is Inspiring because there is so much in that one song . That I can have fun breaking the song down and just practicing the hi hat pattern in that song will improve a drummers self confidence and that is good positive energy. I think it’s important to take the right approach to things especially difficult things. I think it’s discouraging when the person goes man I will never be as good as that person . Drums is like golf it’s all starts with taking the right approach will determine what happens later. I think that sometimes inspiration helps us want to learn helps us with starting. I think discourage can be a sign for break time. So if im stuck on a perticular part of a song . When I feel discouraged that’s my sign to take a break . And give your muscle memory and brain time to process all of what you just did. And then the next time you start practice again will feel little bit more natural to you and so what felt discouraging now you feel confidence growing instead.

No, You can‘t get close to El Estepario without practicing for decades and being focused just on playing the drums. It‘s like 'is Lang Lang discourageing young piano players?‘, considering that he kept practicing 10 hours a day seven days a week for years and years. It all depends on how much are You willing to invest and what are You hoping to gain. With all his technique and miracle drumming El Estepario didn‘t convince me when I heard him playing with his band! Was it really worth it???

I’m 43 and have been playing drums for over 30 years. It’s a bit discouraging to see all of these amazing young drummers that have had KZfaq tutorials their whole lives and are definitely next level. However, I’ve always wanted to play drums for a great song as opposed to shredding alone, so it doesn’t hurt my feelings too much 😅 the fact is that a lot of these amazing shredding drummers wouldn’t know what to do with a great song and be dynamic and musical 👍🏻✌🏻

I get it. Dave's fuzak style music that made him is admittedly, not great listening. His playing is the only thing that makes it worth listening to but it's still not "good" music. I'm pretty sure you know he's playing a lot of different stuff nowadays that's a lot more listenable. You'll never hear Dave Weckl music that's going to make you feel the way Sweet Home Alabama makes you feel but is that really the gold standard for music? I'm an intermediate hobby drummer guy that plays rock with a bunch of locals for fun. I'm about as far away from Weckl's music world as it gets but he's my favorite drummer. There's just too much good stuff in his playing. You admit he's got skills so you know deep in your dark heart (kidding) that he's a total drum stud. So this being a shot because Dave's manager threatened your friend or whatever is pretty petty but ok, you're angry at Dave and you want to take him down a peg. For what it's worth I got to see him play at a very small room and was able to talk to him after the show and he was nice as can be. He signed posters and was appreciative of his fans.

Maybe drummers should do videos showing how they learn something new that they can't play out of the box. The problem of "being a beginner" on learning something new fits to all drummers, no matter how long and good they're playing.

Nope, every time I see a drummer play something I can't (which is most of the time), it immediately translates to "I wanna play that, let's practice". Just drum, people. The world can't have enough drummers. Be the best drummer you can and want to be and have fun along the way.

Some of my students have seen him and don’t seem put off by him. I get what you’re saying but personally I am cool with him. Your video on Weckl was amazing. I find him more annoying and pretentious personally.

The bigger problem for me is they are not playing cool songs with great drums . They are playing technical for the sake of it in most cases. Yes it’s great to play some of that stuff but a huge chunk of the great songs out there had just a simple beat that became iconic . Do we need 4 different time signatures one for each limb and insane speeds ? 🤷🏼‍♂️

I see where you come from but do not agree. El Estepario is amazing entertainment and while I find his message of "I was not born this good, I had to work hard and so can/should you" a bit disingenuous. He had a talent that many do not have and that is fine. I also think that if you do not recognize what he does in his videos for what it is, entertainment, and let it be a factor in your personal desire to be a drummer in a negative/discouraging way, you may not have what it takes to be one to begin.

Yes I think he is discouraging....BUT I'm sure he spends every waking moment practicing drums like an Olympian athlete. And I'm also sure THAT level of practice is not common. Big rock bands are not going after him. Not knocking him.....he IS incredible. I LOVE the drums but remember watching Buddy Rich on the Johnny Carson show several times. I felt like I could never do that.....but Buddy's WHOLE life was devoted to the drums....as this guy's is!!!!

I think it may be just something that most kids would think is 'cool' and then try to emulate it, not be able to, then quit. But there will be some who stick with it and maybe continue to hone their craft. Similar to how guitar hero brought a bunch of kids to instruments. For my part, if other drummers can't read the room on when to lay chops or not then that just means more gigs for me! :D

My favorite band is Phish, as you know from our interaction of Fishman fucking it up. Dude is so inspirational to me. He drives the jams, he truly does. Yet I have the audacity to think, simply because I know rhythm, that a simple Phish song is within my range. Far from truth. I need to practice//Emulate. I probably couldn't play Back in Black if my mothers life depended on it. It's a weird place to be, sir.

I met Dave Weclkl at “The Key Club” in Hollywood back in the late 90’s. He did seem to be a bit up in the clouds, and a bit in need of a personality. However, as good as Vinnie Colaiuta is, he has nothing that Dave needs….vocabulary-wise, anyway.
