My first cow, got him last year as a 3 day old. Lovely natured. Early this year I got another cow that was wild, the Friesland has tamed her down dramatically. While he was not my first choice, I felt sorry for him as he was being sent to the Abbatoir.

Most informative gypsophila video I’ve discovered. One question - I’m in a Mediterranean climate. Hot summers sometimes up to 45C Would it be better if I give my container grown gypsophila afternoon shade?

Jeepers Weihnachten

My father used to told me this …. When he got lost in the forest for 34 days straight,,, he mention a creature that look like a dog and a skin of dragon. He said I’ve never seen a creature that intelligent . Btw my father is a Zoologist. But the sad things is no one believes him . But i know he’s right, because he never lied.

The headline says 2024 but the info is 2023. Still, the information is helpful for someone starting research on their homesteading plan.

No Carpatian Sheperd (Ciobanesc Romanesc Carpatin) on the list? You put the German Sheperd on the list (for unknown reasons as its useless as a LGD) but forgot about a brilliant live stock guardian dog like the Carpatin.

I have a lovely old cookoo maran that has to be about 13 years old as I've had her about 10 years and she was at least 2 when I got her. She is an amazing girl. Huge and full of personality. She has a friend who's also about 9/10 so I've just adopted 2 copper black marans both 15 weeks old to add to the coop. Adorable watching the old girls check out the new ones through their temp separate enclosures. The new girls are stunning. Pics and videos do not do the shine on the feathers justice. The birds are really sweet natured too so I am a happy chook mum right now. I highly recommend the marans. I love how big my old Maud is. She's like a tank.

I’m surprised Marans roosters didn’t get a mention. We have a black copper maran rooster at work. He’s so gentle, leads his ladies around to food, waits until they’ve had a go before he has some, waits outside the coop when they’re laying etc. The only time I’ve seen him get feisty was when someone’s off lead dog tried to chase the hens and he soon saw to it. Feels bad we called him Hugh after Hugh Hefner 😅

We just started quail on our homestead about 2 weeks ago. We have 4 hutches. 3 for breeding and 1 for grow-out and hope to expand that over the next year. Can't say a whole lot about the process just yet but I will say that I do disagree just a tad with focusing on just one avenue of income for your homestead. We prefer to have many different avenues of income as we have chickens for eggs and meat, rabbits to sell as pets/meat, pigs for meat, bees for honey and wax, quail for eggs and selling breeding groups, garden for produce, fruit trees, and eventually other things. One of the reasons we do so many things is that it can take just one horrible disease or disaster to wipe out a whole flock of chickens or rabbits or whatever. If you focus on just one thing and that fails then you are back to square one to rebuild. If, on the other hand, you have diversified, and not 'put all your eggs in one basket' so to speak, then you have other things to fall back on while you rebuild. Doesn't mean you can't give more focus to one or two things like quail and rabbits or whatever and become an expert in just those, but not diversifying can set you back significantly if something goes wrong. And believe me, something will go wrong.
