This is interesting. What BBC R&D is doing here looks like what already been done by Facebook and Google though... but in a more transparent way?

Love, love, LOVE THIS!!!! OMG WHAT TALENT...Emma...what are you doing with your calling to the office of PRESENTER EXTRAORDINAIRE? Bill: What I expected of you, good job. Other characters in the show = you're going places. How is this not 'viral'? :-) A very enjoable 10 mins (technical topic matter notwithstanding..)

The subtitles for this video seem to have been wrongly uploaded. They do not correspond to the video. Apart from that, thank you very much for sharing BBC's R&D's studies with us! These are priceless!!!!! Greetings from a Brazilian video editor.

Great video. I'd love to hear more about BBC R&D's work using AI to colourise b/w images. Will the ColorGAN project be applied to monochrome programmes in the BBC TV archive? www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2019-09-artificial-intelligence-colourisation-video

Hi David, thanks for your question, sorry it took a while, but we have an answer from the team working on this: Thank you for your interest in our colourisation work. ColorGAN is part of a BBC R&D project on visual data analytics (www.bbc.co.uk/rd/projects/visual-data-analytics) intended to be applied in real-world restoration scenarios. As a research stage, the proposed method is optimal if the b/w images are pre-processed to remove artefacts and achieve a reasonable input quality, nevertheless, an end-to-end framework is intended. An ultimate restoration pipeline would include advanced techniques for artefact removal and super-resolution. Take a look at our research paper (arxiv.org/abs/1908.09873) for more technical details.

@@BBCResearchDevelopment Many thanks for the detailed info! Much appreciated. This is a fascinating project. I wondered if ColorGAN might also be applicable in the restoration of archive programmes whose colour signal has been recovered from domestic videotapes. Could ColorGAN be used to further enhance the perceived chroma resolution there? A number of 1970s Dr Who episodes have been meticulously restored by combining b/w film telerecordings with chroma from NTSC Betamax tapes. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oquXgMJksdW4f6s.html

Thank you Emma for changing your audio source so early on 👍👍 would you both do a video about your setup and how you put together the show?
