I adore this song. It's sort of Sleep Token's version of a Jim Steinman-like anthem.

I'm a bit late on this, but I like the analysis and had a little thought to add. Your analysis of the imagery for this song seems spot on, that the emergence of Euclid killing off Vessel is a rebirth. The image appears to be based on Caravaggio's "David with the Head of Goliath" circa 1605, where a depicted David is holding the severed head of Goliath. It was later revealed that Goliath's head was a self-portrait of the artist, and hypothesized that the young David was meant to represent the artist rejuvenated, maining it a double self-portrait. This exactly fits the Vessel rebirth as Euclid as parts of the same artist. Further, the painting has long been understood to also represent good defeating bad, God defeating Satan. This also fits the story of Vessel becoming toxic and in pain, replaced by a good Euclid. Also in this context, the Night Does Not Belong to God at the beginning of the trilogy implies Satan / bad being in control at that point, and now at the end, "the night belongs to you", meaning Euclid, representing God defeating Satan, the good part defeating the bad part of him. I disagree about the car crash part, which I don't take as literal, but more like their toxic romantic relationship became a metaphorical "car crash" in "Granite".

Wow! This was one of my favorite tracks (if possible to pick one) on the album, simply because we get a little taste of all their sounds on one track. That being said, I’ve probably played it dozens of times and even on decent headphones, and still never caught the Chokehold callback. Amazing! Also, I’m loving your videos!! Watched them all from the beginning of the first Sleep Token album and looking forward to finishing this one. Haven’t looked yet, but hoping you covered all of the EP’s also!

I think it was bold of them to not drop this one with the rest of the singles. Its obviously a monumental track on the album, so i get that. But the hip hop part is so tasteful and surely would have generated even more buzz before the full release. We have them all now, thats what matters. Spoiler below, do not read if you're avoiding information about Vessel's past. Stop here to be safe. . . . . . . . . You know i need to ask about that one word, "BL". Its at this point i feel i need to ask if you're making a deliberate choice to analyze this from the perspective of someone who doesn't know what that means. Let me say, i totally respect that. The issue is, Vessel chose to include it (and the C word n Euclid). I dont think its a troll. This art is too important to him. Your hypothesis about the car crash, su1cide attempt are fascinating and insightful - and possibly true in an adjacent sense to the root inspiration for the trilogy. But idk, maybe im a simp. I think he told us, Beard. This is my hypothesis. I think she might have been his first partner, that he built her up to be his savior from the depression and isolation he battled his entire life. She didn't reciprocate. He was too intense, or possessive, or something. He freaked her out with how... obsessed he was. 'Keep the freak show talk to a careful minimum". All of his newfound hope died. He opened his heart to someone for the first time, and she shot an arrow right through it. Vessel, devastated, then buried himself in his music, it was the only thing he could do to get his mind off the heartbreak. He said "fuck it, what do i have to lose now" and invested everything he had to get One (EP) made. It got him noticed - namely, by ii. Two (EP) sealed the deal. Then came time to tell his story. The trilogy would have come out complete in 18 months total if they didn't have to tour, id wager. I mean, when you consider all the work, from every angle, that went into each LP, i think the fact we got them as fast as we did shows how eager Vessel was to get all of this out of him. Clearly, the music was pouring out of him, like a volcano. I don't know what else to say, back to your playlist..

In response to the spoiler part...until very very recently I deliberately avoided V's past as it seemed like that was the wish of the band. So I'm approaching from that perspective because I genuinely have no idea the details other than his name and the old band name. I've never listened to the old music or dug deeper than that. But I understand your interpretation, and think it may even be closer to "correct". My interpretation is more linked to the "theater of the mind" images that I feel the music is trying to communicate, which probably are more metaphorical than literal in retrospect. But that's the magic of art, you can take different things from it! Cheers!

@@BreakingBeard-yv2qt cheers. I've had a few back and forths with the creator of the L.F. archive. I've been tempted to straight up ask them if they know what it's all about. If anyone knows (who us normal fans have access to), it's this person. I've decided against it. Doesn't feel right. I'll let Vessel decide if he wants us to know, or keep perpetuating the mystery in his music.

You've probably learned this in the time since you uploaded, but word is that's mostly iv screaming throughout the verses. When they perform it live, both V and iv are screaming into their respective mics, but my assumption is we're still mostly hearing iv.

I think you're spot on with the last line(s). The first time i heard it, i did indeed assume "him" was the "other guy" that took her away from V. Lately i did come around to believe "him" is the man V was when either they were together, or possibly immediately after their relationship and his emotional wounds (that may have lead to some self inflicted physical wounds) were their most fresh. Fantastic work on this album. I'm only sorry im 8 months late to the party

I feel like if this album were recorded during thr cassette era, High Water would have been the official last listed track, and you would have to fast forward through 20 mins of silence to "find" the secret track, Missing Limbs. Its a beautiful song, and im learning to play it now on guitar, but the end of High Water - as you eloquently said - is the true climax of the album. V's emotion, that crushing guitar riff and ii's extraordinary drumming cap off one of the most complete and eclectic albums of all time

I liked the structure of your analysis of this one! Just a fun observation for Sugar. The instrument in the beginning sounds an awful lot like a jack in the box, or some other vintage wind up toy. The first line, "you play a twisted little game". Winding...twisting. You get it lol

"Marks on my dashboard" could be the warning lights that pop up when your car is having issues or malfunctions. A dashboard also includes the instrument cluster. Since he mentions alarm bells in eyes a few lines later, i think these are related, and figurative. There is no car, he is the car. Shes seeing the warning lights on his face (dashboard) and scars on his arms. Dark signs, warning lights (marks) alarm bells. Excuse me while i resume my deepdive back into your full album analysis. Great stuff as always, Beard

Love the bit on the "spirit box" section. Makes a lot of sense. Im hung up on the end now though. That very distant voice. I cranked the volume on good headphones and discovered two things: first, its female. Second, its being played backwards. If you listen closely you'll hear those trademark clipping artifacts when voices are reversed. Im not gonna jump to any conclusions before i can isolate it and un-reverse it. I think it could be someone important though, given that he A. Put it wayyyy back in the mix, B. Reversed it and C. Included it in the first place.

I really enjoy your depiction of "wash out the salt from my hands" as his rise from the ocean! I never would have seen it that way even with the corelation of lines between Rain - "You cast the dust into nothing And wash out the salt from my hands" and in Atlantic - "So flood me like Atlantic, weather me to nothing Wash away the blood on my hands". I can't thank you enough for doing these analyses.

DYWTYLM - "Do you pull at the chains" Sugar - "Let me wrap the chains" Also, seeing this song perspective as Vessel talking about love to himself in the mirror, connecting to the line from TMBTE, "mirror talk, fake love" is neat and direct because this song DYWTYLM is in autotune and the line delivered in TMBTE is the only line sang in autotune. As always, I appreciate what you do!

Back again with more connections! I've listened to your analysis of the trilogy and am now going thru your album breakdowns in reverse because why not! A line connection that stands out this time here, "Be the first to the feast, let's choke on the past And take to the broken skies at last" With the opening of 'Fall for Me', "In a city of ice there are burning cathedrals Turning the skies into glass And though echoing futures are the buckling sutures That hold shut the wounds of the past" And now the mind flusters! I'm gonna go thru and see when/where it is in this story the sky starts cracking. Its just incredible. Thank you for your time in doing all these videos! I'll see ya again in the next one!
@BreakingBeard-yv2qt

I feel like the cracking sky metaphor is linked to Vessel starting to see through the illusion he's built for himself (his relationship with Sleep). Also, I like the continuation of the water theme in Fall for Me, since a fire being started in a city of ice would result in a flood. I always imagined the "turning the skies into glass" line as Vessel staring up at the surface of the ocean while sinking further. The reflections of the light off the surface reminding him of glass.

Hey hey! Love your channel dude and really enjoy there's ST reactors that have actually listened to the trilogy. I'm going thru your playlists, started with TMBTE and now on this album. One of the fascinating parts of relistening to everything is catching repeated or similar words that's leads us into speculation. And we know with ST there's intention. There's a lot of similarities here with Ascensionism, of course, but these two parts in this song; "alarm bells in your eyes" and "tear my arms off". Here's a bit from Aqua Regia; "Oh and I am done dancing to alarm bells No wonder my ears are still ringing And I am done fighting off change No wonder my arms are still swinging" And now my mind flusters. Would love to know what you think. See ya on the next one!

I think Dark Signs is also referenced in Are You Really OK as well. "Where I was raised there was no streetlights" and "I raised you in the dark" are really similar. But ST is no stranger to repeated themes (see the multiple teeth/bite references), so it's no surprise lyrics would be echoed in other songs as well.

To me, water/blue-ish seems to be Sleep and red/fire seems to be Vessel, so scarlet and ultraviolet makes sense. This could also be him making fun of her searching for things you can't see. Also, phrases like "you can remember only when you're alone" and "we are exhausted by all the pretending" could be references to Levitate. In Levitate, assuming it's from Vessel's pov, Sleep can't remember her words, his cracking bones, the agony of their love or just won't remember. Vessel may be upset that Sleep isn't flat out won't acknowledge something that happened. Only remembering when she's alone. In that song they also mention imitating "perfect days" and Vessel asks specifically if she just needs to forget her words to pretend to fall in love with him again.

Spoiler warning: im going to talk about some of V's past, but won't mention specifics. Don't read this if you are avoiding that kind of information. . . . . As someone who also has stumbled upon his real identity, and listened to all of his material with BC, it seems obvious (maybe too obvious) that this is all about his partner in that project. There's not much to support that they were involved romantically, but i havent done an proper amount of investigation (and won't, out of respect; if he or she wants to talk about it publicly, that's up to them). If we assume they were though, I could imagine a scenario in which someone who maybe as introverted as he is talented (V) finally opening up to someone (G) and commencing a relationship that is passionate not only intimately, but artistically. V, who hypothetically may have struggled with personal connection in his past, would feel an overwhelming amount of love and bonding in this type of relationship. Then it didn't work out, for...who knows why. I won't even bother guessing. This is why I don't necessarily subscribe to the car crash idea. I think it's more likely that he's heartbroken...on a cosmic scale. People with depression tend to catastrophize; I know. Add in a once in generation song writing and vocal ability, and V is born. Finally, lyrically, there's such an abundance of spite in his music. Yes, he could be directing that inwards on some occasions, but i think it's more consistent with that which one experiences in a toxic romantic relationship. V went out of his way to put "B" in one song, and "C" in this one. That can't be overlooked

Thanks for including the spoiler warning, as I have also avoided looking into Vessel's past out of respect for his anonymity. As such, the information about his past was not a factor in my analysis. But the thing that makes his music powerful, in my opinion, is this blurring of the real and the metaphorical. Even if the underlying reality is that he suffered a relatively "normal" heartbreak/break up...it's clear that his internal world was thrown into complete turmoil. And I think a lot of people can map that very relatable feeling onto their own experiences and share in Vessel's suffering...sometimes people in your life "die" before they stop breathing.

@@BreakingBeard-yv2qt I've only just started actually paying attention to his lyrics, and I've been a fan since their (ST) second EP. I'm 38, obsessed with music, and this is the first artist that's inspired me to do that. Also wanted to express my agreement with your take on how this puts the bands future in a precarious spot. Moving on from whatever this is - that which has inspired this monumentally creative and beautiful trilogy of albums - what does that mean? Take the masks off and just go back to work? What does he write about? What will inspire him? Will we hear and feel the same passion going forward? Does he re-identify as Euclid like you hypothesized? Does he just end ST here? Once this tour cycle is complete, we might very well be floored by what LGF has up his sleeves
