I appreciate that you aren’t integrating annoying music in your videos!
@DxDOverland17 сағат бұрын
Music is difficult. There's little agreement on what or when, when it comes to stock music. It's not like having a custom track with a music director who writes music for the video and audio, which can be incredibly effective, yet hardly noticed by the viewer. Still, I do have a few videos where the music runs constantly, but normally prefer to fade it out for most of the presentation.

Ne Fe 😂. I love it. Nephi is pronounced (NeeFi) like WiFi. Nephi has some cool offroad trails as well
@DxDOverland8 күн бұрын
LOL. I'll try to keep that in mind. On another trip I was struggling with properly saying Kanab. Ah, but we have our own tricky ones here in Oklahoma. Boise City ("boyce", not "boy-se") and Miami ("mi-a-mah", not "mi-a-me"), so I can sympathize. BTW, not sure I mention it in the video, but a few years back did travel through Nephi as part of our run of the TransAmerica Trail from Port Orford, OR to Buffalo, OK. Some really cool sections over the mountains. Should you watch those videos, I expect you'll hear me pronounce it wrong there, too.

You got some good cattle guard footage on that one. I though that only I did that. Some pretty cool terrain again. Thanks for sharing! George.
@DxDOverland26 күн бұрын
@@swidahooverlanding2867 I think it was the 2017 solar eclipse where I mounted a camera on the front bumper, pointed down, as I crossed a cattle guard on the way up Hat Point Rd. A nice thing about solo travel is I can spend more time shooting odd camera angles. Usually the folks I travel with are quite accommodating, but I don't ask as much as I might like to do if by myself.
@swidahooverlanding286726 күн бұрын
@@DxDOverland We honk at all cattle guards. It is a old family tradition. Lets the trolls know we are coming so they can let go of the cross beams before we drive over their fingers. Turns out cattle guards are spaced well on long boring stretches to keep the video scenery going. Never have caught a troll on video though.
@DxDOverland26 күн бұрын
When I was a kid, we used to yell out "Jinx joke! You owe me a Coke! 1-2-3!" at every cattle crossing. I taught that to my youngest daughter, so we did that a lot during our travels. Never did see anyone get that Coke though.

New Mexico is a really pretty state. And only lightly traveled. If we'd continued through Chloride Canyon and up over the Continental Divide, we'd have been in the Gila National Forest. I have three other video series exploring that area, including my two past attempts to cross the divide. One was not possible due to deep snow along the route. The other was stopped a short ways before the rock art when my Jeep engine water pump spilt its guts. Fortunately we were able to have one of the other folks run to TorC and pick up a water pump and coolant and swap the pump in the field. However, the delay was long enough that we elected to revert to mostly paved roads to get back into the national forest where we could camp. As for the tire, fortunately I have two second spares, both mounted to rims, for the Wrangler and Gladiator. And the spare we mounted had only slight wear. Since I do drive off pavement a lot, I replace tires pretty early ... well before they are down to the treadwear indicators. So, not really any financial hit. The only question is how I'm going to handle the conversion over to KO IIIs, since that's been in the back of my mind when I get new tires for the Wrangler (by end of year, I expect). Do I buy five tires, and use an old KO II only as a second spare (in the rare case I decide I need to carry one), or buy four KO IIIs (and use KO IIs as all four spare tires)?

Sooo. at 4:41 there is that shelf road. What is the significance of the road? Was there industry out there? That looks like it took some effort and money to complete. Does it go anywhere other than the canyon? Excellent video and series Mark!
@DxDOverlandАй бұрын
According to the Butler Motorcycle Map, that is BIA Road 6150. It is one of the ones that you add to your travel permit purchased in Cameron. The map info is a bit misleading, since it says to buy the permit before heading north from Cameron. Which is after you've already traveled on 6150 if you're headed south to north. It connects up to Hwy 64, or if you take one of the alternate routes, it is bringing you down from the national forest area that we had camped in the preceding night. We didn't see any industry--but the views, headed north on the AZBDR like we were, are just incredible.

Another great series of trip videos! I’ll carry 2 Scepter 2.5 gallon water cans (plus spout and cap wrench) secured under a shelf where the back seat would’ve been mounted in my TJ manual Rubicon. Plus several Nalgene bottles & US canteen w/cup in the footwell behind the driver’s seat. Two bottles of water in the cup holders behind the console and a case/flat of water in the front pax seat footwell. Those Scepter water cans are durable.

I've had the 2020 Gladiator four years now, and had it out on a number of trips. Its first one, where I discuss it, was the Big Bend Explorations, January 2020 trip. A few other good trips to see it in action include El Camino del Diablo, February 2020; A Gathering of Wanderers, September-October 2022; Merus Winter Adventure, December 2023; and West Utah Winter Adventure, February-March 2024. It has also been on less-extended trips around Oklahoma during that time.

Those low water crossings are horrifying on a motorcycle. I don't overland, but do ride back country on a motorcycle. Can't stand them. Most awful things ever. My preference is to walk them on foot first, and maybe even just walk the bike with a hand on the throttle. Looks so much easier in a car. If you haven't tried it, give a look to the Tony Hugel Heart of the West Route. I've ridden almost all of it. Just outstanding. Even better than the BDRs I've done.
@DxDOverland2 ай бұрын
I'll have to ask the fellows traveling with me about that route. Most of them are also ADV bike riders. I rode in a past life ,(in California, Thailand, Mississippi from 1967-82), but long story short: When I retired from USAF, had to get an Oklahoma driver's license. Had motorcycle on my California license, but I needed to take the written test. I hadn't studied for it,. nor had I ridden since living in Biloxi, MS 14 years earlier, so I let it go. Now I'd have to do the six months learner's permit, etc, and at 74 I'm not the same young fellow I once was. Four wheels suits me fine.
