I've looked thru all of your videos and searched many others... however, I haven't been able to find a repair similar to my need. I love how you did a perforated leather car seat repair. You made temporary stitches and pulled the leather edges closed. I'm not sure this is possible with my dilemma. Do you have any videos or suggestions?

Yes, good point! Of course, even then over time the UV will takes its toll. For example, house paint will typically only be expected to last for a specified number of years. The chemistries have got much better in recent years too.

Should we do painting by heat necessarily, if we going to apply paint on top?

@@MotoERS I probably should have mentioned that while the remelt makes the surface smooth again the coloring effect is not 100 percent as when you would paint it. So yes, both would be necessary. Thanks

Thank you for this video. I have turned down several leather table top jobs over the years and ended up taking one recently. I was stressed about using contact cement and having little to no margin for error or time. Using Bondo instead of wood filler is a very helpful suggestion and wall paper paste is a real game changer!

Rick that was a very good explanation of some of the various issues that we are running into more and more these days. I recently did a repair on a Mercedes outer bottom bolster, like your sofa, the more I worked with it the worse it got. I finally got to a point where I felt I had done all I could do. Sadly I had informed the customer on the front end that the seat cover needed to have at least that section replaced, but he just wanted a "cheap" fix. So I gave him what he wanted, and with NO warranty! I've seen and replaced seats and other trim that must have been PU not PVC, in those cases the material was just disintegrating. in RVs and airplanes too. And it really is a shame to see that type material used in expensive vehicles and airplanes. I figured that the typical delamination was caused by exposure to sweat body oil etc but the fact that just body heat can cause that make sense too. I can''t tell you how many times we have had customers come in to get their leather seats or trim repaired / recovered, and they get very upset when I let them know that the parts that are bad are not leather. Many years ago Nissan was sued because the window sticker said "leather seats" when in fact the seats were made leather seating surface and vinyl trim. As I recall the outcome was that Nissan offered the affected customers $2000 off the purchase of a new vehicle, so that was not much of a win there for the consumer. Despite knowing how the materials are made some techs are still doing repairs on delaminated interior parts. Yes in some cases a repair tech can make it "better", I see some videos online frequently where they are very proud of that type repair. But we know that in the long run those repairs will NOT hold up. But that's another story of the mindset of making fast money vs doing quality work. I'm looking forward to seeing more about this in future videos, as always thank you so much for all that you do in sharing this information!

Thanks for another great video, Rick. I was told by a supplier at MTE once that a similar law was passed in Germany several years ago, in particular with reference to "vegan leather". He explained that one manufacturer was using pineapple fibers as a base for the material, which was causing premature breakdown. I naively assumed there was already a similar law in the states to protect consumers here. (It's been decades since I've bought a new vehicle with any form of leather or leather look alike material). Shamefully, it's obvious from your research that manufacturers are intentionally keeping people in the dark. It's not easy sometimes being the person that has to inform a customer that what they thought to be leather is, in fact, synthetic. I've had at least two people in the short amount of time that I've been doing this work that were completely unable to accept that fact. It seems like the newer the vehicle is, the more likely it is to have PU. By the way, knowing that you also become frustrated and dissatisfied with the results of a repair and reach a point that you just have to call it done is somehow comforting.
