I did wonder whether proacryl Mahogany was similar to either of the citadel browns? I did recently get ak wine red but to use as skin shadows on faces. Interesting video, which has given great opinions on the uses of each of these colours.
@magnusnielsen75995 күн бұрын
A trick you can do with the darker colors is to mix white in. you see some of the other pigments come through then and you can easier tell if they are similar in color

on the subject of the pots- for me the issue is the paint that dries around the edges of the pot. I lost a screamer pink pot because I didn't realize the back was cracked open due to the paint buildup around the rim and the whole thing dried out 😥 Nowadays I do everything I can to find the same paint in a better package. Unfortunately I can't find a real replacement for Khorne red...
@GitGudPainting6 күн бұрын
It's an excellent point regarding the paint build-up, and unfortunately there's such a wide disparity in pot quality. Have you tried AK Wine Red as a sub for Khorne Red?

@@GitGudPainting i have not but its high on the list! It's one of the few I haven't tried but hearing the endorsement in the video it is definitely next in line
@GitGudPainting6 күн бұрын
Let us know how it goes!
@magnusnielsen75995 күн бұрын
Yes, this is the real issue for me too. I don't mind pots at all anymore and I have a bad habit of not scraping the gunk of the rim, even though I clearly should. I will say, while I defo have some favorite paints, I am firm in my believe that the exact paint matters much less than the application. A slight change in tone or hue shouldn't be the deciding factor in picking a paint. You can always mix in a tiny bit of red/blue/yellow/green/black/white/whatever to get closer to the color you want.

my favorite paints are: Darkstar Molten Metals, best metallic paints ever! I don't even bother with any other metallics now. They introduce their "Gem" colors a while back, metallic reds, greens and blues, and a little while ago they brought out 4 washes, comparative to citadels most popular washes. Instar Paints Alpha range are my go to acrylics, and with only 16 colors in the range, they are a "mixing" range. Available in 10, 20 and 50ml droppers, and some colors in100ml, you can dip your toes or go all in. They do have an extensive range of free PDF's on their website, from Color Theory to mixing Formulas eg Rhinox Hide is made with Warm Red:Oxide Black:Oxide Red; 1:11:1 drops of each. They are just about to release an Painting App as well AP tones/washes have been my preferred washes for many years. I've just started playing with Vallejo Xpress Colors, I need a bit more practise with them, but can see the potential. I may look at picking up some of the new formulation Game and Model colors at some point in the not to distant future

Citadel, vallejo, and AK are my main paints. However, i've been trying out AP's fanatic paints recently and they'll probably become a mainstay. They have some really interesting colors and are quite affordable

Its a good question and one I didn't think of when editing. Generally it's for layering with colours.

"Everything looks better in person, but way more achievable" - I felt this so much, especially NMM. I chatted briefly with Arnau about this subject and he said that IRL you can see that NMM is not magic and is just paint. Now I'd argue some of his stuff does look like magic haha, but it was super interesting to hear.

Hey there! Thanks for the feedback - we always appreciate people reaching out. Magnus' style is quite back-and-forth which can be very hard to follow for beginners. Our 'Getting Started - NMM' video might be a better place to help explain the fundamentals. Regardless though, we'll definitely look at how to onboard beginners better.

Thank you! Great video on a complex subject. Could you elaborate on how to interpret the columes on a anatomic bust? When I try to paint an orcs, for example, I get lost on where to place the base coat, shadows, and highlights. Should I approach each muscle as a single form initially, connecting them later? If so, how should I determine the light source position for each muscle group?
@GitGudPainting14 күн бұрын
You've essentially got it right in answering your question. Taking the example of muscle groups on an arm, we can think of the arm as a cylinder, and the muscle groups as cylinders on that cylinder. This can be quite overwhelming though when you're starting out, so a zenithal prime (initial prime of black followed by a prime of white in the direction of your light source) can help you visualise the volumes at play better.

Great video! As a beginner, I'm struggling with basic concepts like brushstrokes, light and shadow and colors. This kind of video is what I'm looking for. It would be perfect if you could suggest some simple exercises to practice. Thank you!
@GitGudPainting14 күн бұрын
It's a great question. I think the first thing I'd say is focus on one thing at a time in your journey. You mention light/shadow, colours and brush control. Brush control will come with time, providing you're painting your minis and having fun, you'll build up that fine motor control, so don't worry too much about forcing improvement. So initially I'd focus on light/shadow (or volumes as I would typically frame them). Personally I think space marines are great for learning volumes as they have nice big primitive shapes. Take a reference photo with a single light source and try to duplicate it on the model using just a single colour and adding black/white to the mix.
