This was so random but I feel like a once in a lifetime opportunity. What a beautiful animal! Peafowl were introduced to Southern California by several wealthy Angelenos, including real estate magnate Elias "Lucky" Baldwin (for whom Baldwin Hills was named), who is known as the founder of the City of Arcadia. Others included Hugh Hefner of Playboy fame, William Wrigley of chewing gum fame, and Edward Sargent, who first designed the process of land titling. According to a 2010 LA Times article, Baldwin was the first one to import-from India in 1878 to live on his land in what is now Arcadia.

The American Coot eats mainly aquatic plants including algae, duckweed, eelgrass, wild rice, sedges, hydrilla, wild celery, waterlilies, cattails, water milfoil; when on land they also pick at terrestrial plants and sometimes eat grains or leaves of oak, elm, and cypress trees. They’re not exclusively vegetarian. You may also see them eating insects (beetles, dragonflies, and others), crustaceans, snails, and small vertebrates such as tadpoles and salamanders. Both the male and female incubate the eggs, which means the parents take turns keeping the eggs warm until they hatch. The eggs hatch about 23 days after the female lays them. The young look like the adults, except they are lighter in color. Both parents share the job of feeding and teaching their young, dividing the number of chicks between them. After one month, the young can dive underwater for their own food. They can fly 5 to 6 weeks after hatching and are fully independent after about 2 months. Both the male and female incubate the eggs, which means the parents take turns keeping the eggs warm until they hatch. Thanks Steve!! I finally could tell they were Coot a few weeks ago from the red ❤️eyes 👀 and of course their call !! The American Coot ( Fulica americana ) also known as a mud hen or pouldeau, is a bird of the family Rallidae. Though commonly mistaken for ducks, Groups and of coots are called covers or rafts. The oldest known coot lived to be 22 years old
