I think the first question to ask is why writing a mentally ill character as in; how does the character having this mental illness move the plot along better compared to if it wouldn't have this mental illness? Personally I would go with looking for traits that make up a mental illness and see how these traits would influence such character's behavior, in severity, quantity, and maybe other factors I haven't thought about now. Mental illnesses in real life can be a challenge to live with and that alone could make for a very interesting character.

The next big step: getting people to buy the book and read it. That will take some convincing (ahem, marketing). Maybe reveal the first chapter as a free sample, or maybe the first three chapters, and if people are interested in the characters or the plot, then they may actually buy the book from you. Money earned.

Depends on the audience. If you're a guy, we often want clinically graphic detail and filthy language. Ironically, emotions and metaphors tend to bore most of us. It's robbery! Like a sex scene in a film where they keep their shirts on.

Looking at the other commenter's list I think Enmity fits the bill nicely. But the other question I had is what is the degree and type of "lover-ness" that they have in the end? Is this a wild fling of passion, a seduction, a long term relationship? The type of love affair that they will have and the intensity is something to think about. Also do they like each other in the end? Not all relationships are built on mutual respect and trust.

0:52 🎯 Knowing the purpose of your sex scene is crucial; consider whether it advances the plot, builds character, arouses emotion, or serves another specific function. 1:58 🖋 Choose your words carefully; use language that matches the mood and purpose of the scene, avoiding clinical terms and excessive metaphorical language. 2:57 📝 When describing body parts, opt for words that maintain the scene's mood and purpose, avoiding overuse of synonyms and overly ornate language. 4:25 🚪 Writing sex scenes in private can foster creativity and remove feelings of awkwardness or shame, leading to a more authentic portrayal. 5:32 🎶 Creating the right atmosphere with music can enhance the mood and help you visualize the dynamic between characters in your scene. 6:59 ❌ Don't feel pressured to include a sex scene in your writing if it doesn't serve your story or if you're uncomfortable with it; it's okay to skip it or imply it instead.

Dealing with any illness (physical or mental) when trying to write novels is not easy! I know because I have a plethora of ailments (generalized anxiety + panic disorder, ADD, Schizoaffective and IBS, carpal tunnel...). I got my first idea 20 years ago but I still haven't completed my first draft! What you say it's true. I always listened to my limits. For the longest period of time I could not do anything concrete with my writing. As a solution in the low times, I was watching tones of movies/series trying to find similar ones to what I want to write or listening to tones of audiobooks (non-fictions on the art of writing) and I filled piles of notebooks with my ideas for the last decades! And all of this paid paid off because I've learned a lot on the craft and now I got a killer outline lol Sure it helps that I found a day job where I answer customer emails and learned to type very fast in both languages and helped me work on my self-editing skills.. but taking care of your health is of prime importance, working on improving your routine(sleep, time blocking) and diet is of prime importance for me. I also use the Miracle Morning for Writers by Hal Elrod to help me implement consistency with daily reading and writing. :)

@gamewriteeye769

So in effect, write them with respect in relation to your story and genre. Will keep that in mind, although, I've heard it's also best not to specify and label it either, which you seem to be suggesting is to be brought to the forefront. That's not how we define our characters with any of these sort of issues; rather it is subtly woven in, and thus, does have an effect on the story if it affects the plot going on, then perhaps whatever the situation is, it then becomes brought to light because of it or not. My point is, and you've probably heard this term before, is to use _ambivalence_ when writing characters with a mental illness.

To the last point - having written solely as a creative outlet AND with intent to publish, I would say the latter stimulated more attention to craft and the former was funner. (Notably because I could use words like, “funner.”)
