Gecko people should consider taking inspiration from the chelonian crowd and put together a formal organization like the Turtle and Tortoise Preservation Group to coordinate maintaining captive populations of these species. Stuff like making lists of who has what, facilitating breeding loans, getting animals in the hands of people who want to propagate them, etc. I also wonder how many of the species currently being imported will disappear from the hobby when shipments inevitably stop. For example, how many species of Paroedura are truly established in the hobby besides P. picta? By that I mean having more than a handful of breeders regularly producing them; all too often a species that was "readily available" disappears when the one person who was producing them gets out of the game due to choice or losing their breeding group. That's not even getting into the Cyrtodactylus, Tarentola and smaller genera that are rarely bred by anyone...

Except it is a Pachydactylus shown on the thumbnail :) I know there are a few of these species where less than 2 or 3 people currently have them.

Awesome and informative! Maybe one day I'll get some Pachydactylus and breed em too... I've seen a few of them for sale online but rarely captive bred (besides y'all breeding them in captivity). They seem like such neat geckos to watch and care for!

Can you send me a photo of your 6" P. picta? My largest is just over 4". It is most common to see P. picta in captivity around this size. Yes, they are small but right on that line :) Thank you!

I just got a crested gecko, and I'm not sure of the age just yet. I need to find a growth chart to compare. But I was super excited when he finally took a meal worm. I'm very happy. I don't know how many to give him at a time, so I will start with one, with his repashy mango mix, then work my way up and see what he's comfortable with. Or she. I don't know what the gender is just yet. He's still skittish but I'm hoping he'll learn to trust me.

I see you linked Firehouse Geckos in the description. I have several products of theirs: magnetic vine holders, feeding ledge that holds two dishes, and a little magnetic hut. I find their products to be top notch, especially the magnets; not too weak, not strong like the hulk. Perfect in the middle to comfortably hold a 43 gram adult gecko who jumps off the feeding ledge like a trapeze artist. I had another brand's magnetic hut where the magnets were just too strong--if I didn't slide the magnets up the glass to meet carefully versus just pinning them on, my tank glass would have easily shattered. Plus, I love how the feeding ledges from Firehouse Geckos come with six metal dishes! So easy to wash! Stroodies is another good maker, but when I bought one of their feeding ledges, the magnets weren't strong enough. So to be honest, not too crazy over them because of that.
@SupremeGecko
@SupremeGecko 3 күн бұрын
Agreed. For us, using the stroodies is fine for small geckos- ESPECIALLY at the cost point. The Firehouse Geckos products are TOP NOTCH though!

Opinions on breeding and keeping other types of roaches as feeders? For example red runners. If you have experience with other roaches would you say that their diets can be kept similar to dubias?
@SupremeGecko
@SupremeGecko 5 күн бұрын
I enjoy working with dubia for many reasons but the most important is the fact that they are easily contained in an enclosure. I've worked with several others including RRs and don't any more because of this. Virtually the same diet. Our Supreme Feeder Food works great for all dubia (and crickets and mealworms).
