Is this Dave's equivalent of the Alexandria Quartet?

wow thats so great so do you think gurjiev didnt visit that place? If it looks as if abondaned for centirues ?
@dalibunuel1726 күн бұрын
Thank you! This was more of a "what if" film about the remarkable men idea! It is truly hard to know just where Gurdjieff visited in Central Asia. So much of that wrapped in mystery.!

Wandering auto graveyards is a combination of therapy and sadness for me....imagine those derelicts when they were new and look at them now !

Yes, they house the remnants of our former empire in autos. This place had qualities of both sadness and serenity. A Sunday morning. Alone with the camera witnessing these cars turning back into nature. Kind of poetic really. Thanks for writing!

Great cinematography in this. Nightmarish qualities for an unsettling story...

Thank you! Zach Donohue shot the film. He would go on to direct THE DEN a number of years later!

At some point, sorry, but I don't remember the exact year, Durrell revisited Alexandria. Almost from the outset one had the impression that he was appalled, that he couldn't wait to leave. It may have been around 1977, but, poet that he was, he was both resentful of and heartbroken that the place had changed so much. Do you remember if you had any sense that you and your mates were in Justine and Darley's city or was it essentially an alien place with no touchstones, the city of the Quartet long since subsumed by change . . ? Cheers!

I did not know of Durrell's return in the 70s but, yes, the city had lost its international flair by the 70s.... So many people from throughout the Levant who had called Alex home had fled in the 60s and the 70s.... It was rundown... I imagine L.D. would have seen that right off...and mourned that fact... Great note, very cool, and much appreciated!!! In the end though we were glad to have seen it. The Cecil was awesome.... It was exotic... people welcoming.....

he / the BBC made a documentary about his re-visit, in 1977 called Spirit of Place, which doesnt seem to exist anymore, unless it's sitting on an old tape in someone's attic!

@@maryschumm9866 Many thanks for this. It does seem a bit confusing due to the fact that there's another "Spirit of Place" doc still up on KZfaq about Durrell's time in Greece. I was fortunate enough to watch the Alexandrian "Spirit of Place" on KZfaq, but you are quite correct that it appears to have vanished. A pity. Wouldn't it be lovely if some enterprising film folk undertook the daunting task (and expense) of filming the Quartet . . . if only to atone for the 1969 debacle Justine? Cheers!

Thanks so much for this comment! There were four Darleys in town that trip --- all of us teachers from a Boys' school in southern Turkey... Brit and American. All big Quartet fans. All in Darley mode ---- Thanks again!
