Good vid. Would be nice to see a video on Mean Radius instead of group ES. There are a number of considerable advantages to focusing only on mean radius & leaving group ES off the table altogether. Group ES is almost irrelevant when assessing hunting rifle accuracy. ES has been used for decades, before the virtues of mean radius were recognised & unfortunately, we continue to live with group ES legacy. The negatives of ES are that there are only ever 2 data points regardless of the number of shots in the group. The 2nd & most important negative of group ES is that the two shots dictate the accuracy between the two worst shots & not the proximity of all the shots to the POA or, the centre of the Points of impact. Mean Radius on the other hand, takes account of every shot in the group, tells you where the impacts are with respect to your POA &, allows the hit probability to be calculated with regard to the target range. Mean Radius also shows the rifles true repeatability over a reasonable number of shots by averaging the POI dispersion with regard to the POA. This is especially relevant to hunters where it is only the POI correlation to the POA which is important. Mean radius will put an entirely different focus on how you assess your rifle accuracy/repeatability.
@JustAnotherGuyAdventures5 күн бұрын
I agree completely this really wasn’t a ES video. This was just a video to see if I could get the 7 WSM to 7 PRC speeds. I appreciate the comment. I use mean radius myself a little getting more and more into it!
@rotasaustralis5 күн бұрын
@@JustAnotherGuyAdventures I forgot to mention the results you got were very interesting. I thought for sure the PRC would get higher velocities than the WSM. My initial comment on Mean radius wasn't a criticism. Not that you seem to have taken it as such, just making my position clear. I have been commenting on other channels as well about the benefits of mean radius over ES. I truly think it's about time there was a move away from group ES. I honestly believe group ES is detrimental to how shooters perceive their rifle accuracy & I'm trying to encourage channels to make the change. Mean radius is so much more interesting & can provide so much more reliable information. I look fwd to your next vid.

Is that using a 7 WSM case, or is it a 300 WSM case necked down? For those who don't know, the 7 WSM case's shoulder is farther forward, giving it more capacity than the 270 or 300 WSM. Specs on the rifles?7 wsm saami chamber?
@jfess19115 күн бұрын
Looking at the loaded cartridge, it looks like a custom chamber with a much longer throat. It looks like a long action would be needed for it (the rifle itself is a Rem 700 long action). That is the issue with Short Magnums, they need longer actions to keep the bullet out of the powder compartment and perform their best. They were designed before laser rangefinders became widely available, so they were designed to shoot relatively light bullets very flat out to 400 yards or so errors in range estimation would not be a big deal. Within a few years, after good rangefinders became affordable, longer, heavier, higher-BC bullets became more popular.

I’d like to see how the WSM does with a shorter barrel. Not because I’m rooting for it to be better than the PRC all things being equal but because I’m not a fan of longer barrels. 22” is about the longest barreled rifle I’m interested in owning and make my cartridge selection accordingly.
@user-vf2hq3xg9c4 күн бұрын
@@Westerner_ sbr's are as a tactical weapon used with a suppressor make a lot of sense. To us old fuds any barrel shorter than 20inch is a carbine now referred to as a sbr . For hunting purposes I keep my barrels 22-26 inches depending on cartridge. If you don't mind turning your 308win into a 30-30 go ahead & shorten the barrel to any length you want , you're the one paying for it. Magnum cartridges need longer barrels to get the performance or what's the point ! Muzzle blast with a short barreled Magnum with a Muzzle break is just crazy disturbing on the range or for hunting. Interesting times & lots of options .
@Westerner_4 күн бұрын
@@user-vf2hq3xg9c I completely disagree. Ruger makes several factory rifles with 20” barrels that are designed for hunting, most people building custom rifles now days are going with a 22” or shorter barrel. You lose a little velocity in trade for a much more packable easier handling package. 300 WSM 6.5 PRC and 7 SAUM all do well with an 18-20” barrel. There’s not a critter alive I can think of that would know the difference wether it was shot with a 24” or 20” .308, I’d rather not lug that longer stick around in the woods.
