It was actually a lot more democratic back then, before big corporations got more powerful and brainwashed people through mainstream media, research, etc.

I love the video and all the nostalgic, bittersweet comments. But in fairness, any city around Christmastime is a more romantic atmosphere. In fact, autumn through New Year's. It's all fun and games until --- suddenly it's January 2nd and you're back to reality, and realizing you're a year older.

NY in the 1970's was magical; it was the pivot between the "Old New York" of Fred Astaire, 1950's optimism, 1960's chic, and the modern era ushered in by the Reagan era and ascendancy of "greed is good" culture associated with that. NYC still had a lot of soul that hadn't quite been sold yet at that stage. I may be weird, but Gimbel's department store epitomized NY in this era: unlike the polished, ever-new glamour of Macy's, Gimbel's had the gritty glamour of a still-hanging-on 1940's atmosphere. Back in the 1970's before it became the center of global hyper-hyper-wealth, everywhere you looked you had these gritty remnants of earlier decades. When money levels associated with Wall Street and investment banking skyrocketed in the Reagan era, all that "grit" got laundered away like a Michael Milken/Ivan Boesky insider trading deal. I MISS that OLD NEW York. Great musuc, btw, capturing the mood and style of that period.

Never understand why my parents didn't take me to see it then. But at six years old, most people were working saving & advancing in their careers. Plus the crime then. But I would rather have gone then when everyone was alive & people were living. At least it was civil. Now @ 53 old & aunt who actually lived in a subsidized New York Manhattan apartment passed. If civility is a thing of the past, then there is too much unrest at 53 years of age so forget it.

1976 was a terrible time for NYC in terms of crime, drugs, and economics, but there was opportunity for Olympia and York who bought up so much cheap real estate and made a fortune. Plus, the mom and pop shops and burgeoning punk scene made parts of it interesting.

Eighteen years of age that year , and I grew up in Brooklyn across the bridge . I was part of the ‘ bridge and tunnel crowd ‘ . The film ‘ MaCarthur ‘ , starring Gregory Peck , was playing at Radio City Music Hall that Christmas season . My mom and I were in the habit of having our Thanksgiving dinner at Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips restaurants , or sometimes we’d schlep into Manhattan to eat at the Weinerwald restaurant , where I would always order veinerschnitzle .

Dont care what they might say about NY in the 70's just needed the right person and time, today its the worse time ever, nothing can fix it unless you get rid of the Leaders[so called] of today and the Lap Dogs, will never happen they gave the city away to the savages, and people are not uniting and fighting back NY is Finished, now you have Rich who wont walk outside bythemselves and the Projects who rule the city because they let them, unless i can carry a gun good bye NY.Your Polititions today are spinless and worthless and plain Dumb.Soon the tourist will stop cant waite to see that,so go ahead you Bums hand it over to the animals.

In our Bicentennial year, we were in the midst of a "Stagflation Recession" caused by OPEC quadrupling the price of Oil. It doubled again in the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution/Hostage taking, in 1979. Gas-Guzzling Continental and LD2 cars were OUT...and fuel-sipping compacts were IN. In the Reagan years (really-beginning in the Carter years) All of the Old Industrial Sinecures disappeared, and Union membership Plunged. Reagan would not even set aside funds to retrain the millions of workers. If you weren't college-educated, you could either flip burgers, or risk dealing Crack Cocaine. Crime Soared in the Reagan/Bush era, capped off with the LA riots of 1992. Homlessssness increased as Mental Health clinics closed, and SRO hotels vanished in our Big Cities. With EV technology, those Nations KNOW that their days in the Oil Business are numbered.
