I get the rest, but why is dash german? I mean, "gesundheit" is a common response in america simply due the lack of the english equivalent dash is more the latino type imo...

Well, changing of language out of convenience and/or ignorance about the meaning of words is not reserved to English. It happens everywhere. Since this has very likely happened from the beginning of language and might in some way even be what got language itself started, I'm relaxed about it as long as it doesn't cause grave misunderstandings. Official German language reform was something way more disruptive than evolving jargon.

Most English words are in fact from other foreign languages too. English is a mix of a lot of languages. For example "bless" originated from latin and greek and so on. If you throw together a lot of languages and destroy the real usage of the words, destroy any origin and change it until it sounds very easy and kinda lame, you get English.

Let's see, we have linguistic purism, linguistic prescriptivism, an ignorance of etymology, a shallow understanding of English phonology, and the stating of opinion as fact to top it off. Lady and gentlemen, we have the entire circus.

I'm always wondering why foreign language expressions are widely used in English speaking cultures where English words are available. Gesundheit! = Bless you! Kindergarten = play school / nursery school Schadenfreude = gloating
@nathanwest23046 жыл бұрын
"gesundheit" is the non religous response, more casual schadenfreude is kinda it's own thing imo...almost like gloating, but not quite now....I understand that there are english phrases for german words used in english....but I guess it's just not the same as saying "mahlzeit" when you say "enjoy your meal" for whatever reason it seems to have become a part of the english vocabulary... the lingual migration(or whatever) works both ways tho...leading to some denglish abominations on the internet....
