Hello, what are you coating your earrings with to keep them from oxidizing and dirtying your ears? If it is a varnish, what kind of varnish? I'm asking because the earrings bend and the lacquer cracks when I use them. How are you solving this problem? Thank you.
@Door44Studios
@Door44Studios 6 күн бұрын
@@natanata9769 I get this question a lot, and my answer is always the same. I don't coat my jewelry with any sort of varnish, lacquer, or anything else. I prefer raw copper because it's much easier to maintain. That being said, I don't have any problems with it discoloring my skin. It sounds like you're not hardening your ear wires enough if they're bending easily. Maybe consider switching to half hard wire instead of dead soft. That will help you achieve a higher degree of stiffness that will minimize the sort of flexion that can crack your chosen varnish. Personally, I clean my jewelry frequently (maybe once a week for the pieces I wear daily, less frequently for those I don't wear as often) with a Sunshine cloth. I find that's all I need to do to keep my jewelry looking its best and to keep it from staining my skin.

Will this work with titanium wire?
@Door44Studios
@Door44Studios 9 күн бұрын
@@retrosnowwhite7077 I don't think so. I've never worked with titanium wire, but I believe it has a higher melting point than silver or copper. So you will likely need a different torch. Most goldsmiths use acetylene torches, which blend gasses to create a hotter, more tightly concentrated flame for detail work on precious metals with higher melting points.

Do you have to put it through the tumbler? Can the piece just be done after patina and hand polish?
@Door44Studios
@Door44Studios 2 ай бұрын
You do not have to tumble. Tumbling is one of the most convenient polishing techniques because you can polish multiple pieces at once. But you can absolutely polish your pieces by hand, either with a basic polishing cloth or with a rotary tool, if you have one.

Thank you for this. Great tutorial! I have a couple questions. 1) do we have to use only sterling silver or pure copper? So for instance, any silver filled or plated silver would not work, right? 2) Also, about the pickle. Should we have pickle dedicated for each metal? I don’t do high quantity of anything. So can I use the same pickle for both or keep separate? Could we keep the pickle in a sealed jar until ready for use? Thank you!
@Door44Studios
@Door44Studios 3 ай бұрын
@suedaum plated and filled wires do not ball up well because you're dealing with two different metals. So, even if you can coax them into a ball, the finish is going to be different than the rest of your wire. It's not necessary to dedicate your pickle, but it's not a bad idea either. The main thing is to make sure you don't introduce steel into the pickle by using steel tongs or tweezers to pull wire out of your pickle. And yes, you can definitely store your pickle in a sealed container between uses. That's a really good idea.

why doesn't the shot scratch the beads in your jewelry?
@Door44Studios
@Door44Studios 4 ай бұрын
Good question! Shot will damage certain fragile beads, so I'm very careful about the types of beads that I tumble. But for gemstones with sufficient hardness and true colored glass beads, the shot is harmless. A good quality jeweler's shot mix has a high polish finish and very smooth edges. So, there are no burrs or sharp bits that can scratch the jewelry. Also, the soapy water acts as a mild lubricant. That creates the conditions that allow the shot to polish the metal surfaces without damaging the gemstones or beads. But, again, I am VERY selective about the types of beads that I tumble. I've done a lot of experimentation through the years, so I know what I can tumble and what I can't. When in doubt, always tumble a single bead that you're willing to sacrifice to see if your beads can handle being tumbled. Most crystal beads (particularly those with AB finishes) can't be tumbled. The same for some of the cheaper Czech glass beads. And soft gemstones (anything with a Mohs hardness of 5.5 or less) definitely can't handle being tumbled. Anything with a hardness of 6.0 or higher is usually safe.

Heat wasn't consistent; torch would "run out of fuel;" but when I started to store it a couple hours later & turned it on to make sure it was empty, there was a flame. Will return the torch to the big box store where I bought it. Also figured out that the bernzomatic torch I bought at my local big box store is different thnt the one referenced here from amazon.
