Thank you for this informative video! I live in a small apartment and would not be doing heavy cooking often (mostly using oven, stir fry and pan grill). Im considering not to install a hood but I'll have an exhaust fan at my kitchen window, and a ceiling fan for air circulation. Will that be sufficient? Or do i still require a hood? Appreciate your thoughts, thank you! :)

In the US, power outlets in islands has been a general requirement. But in the latest 2023 National Electrical Code, it no longer is. The reasoning being that MANY people, especially children, have been injured by pulling hot appliances off islands and getting burned. But there is still a requirement that there be provision for adding outlets in an island. However, as with nearly everything in the US, the local code is going to vary widely and wildly. The NEC code is really just a model, different jurisdictions can adopt it in whole or in part. We don't (generally, AFAIK) have that "no outlets within reach of the sink" requirement - but outlets near a sink MUST be GFCI-protected, either individually or at the circuit level. Is that a thing in the UK? Pretty much every bathroom sink in the US has an outlet right next to it for shavers and hairdryers, for example, and there is usually one on either side of the kitchen sink too. Mine are certainly easily within reach. And I feel like US light switches are typically mounted a bit higher than in the UK, for some reason. In my new house that is under construction, I have concealed outlets in the kitchen. They are outlet strips mounted to the underside of the cabinets, behind the under-cabinet light strips. That is not allowed by code everywhere in the US, but is fine in my area. Regular outlets in the ends of the island, with USB ports, plus a couple of wireless charging pads inset into the island top.

I wish I had more room and more MONEY! I got most of what I wanted in my new house, but more lineal footage would have been nice. And as an American, I wish I could afford integrated appliances - but with the ridiculous costs for that in the US, that would have literally, not kidding, DOUBLED the cost of my IKEA kitchen. The whole kitchen, not just the appliances. I do have a workstation sink, tall pantry cabinet, coffee/breakfast station, wall oven and induction cooktop, And a pretty good sized island.

if you have large windows covering the entire front of the cooking range, do you even need to turn on the range hood if the windows are open? is the range hood even effective if the hypothetical windows are open as it would seem the hood will just suck the air from the windows instead of the fumes from the range.

Totally on board with the zone method. The ‘triangle’ never worked for me and I’ve struggled, in every house I’ve occupied, to get in a groove with my prep and cooking. Finally had a chance to tear out a kitchen and design it with me in mind. It was such a rewarding process, even though it cost a bit more with a complete tear out. The workflow made me want to be in my kitchen and it felt like an extension of myself. Sadly, my husband needed to relocate and I’m, now, in an outdated and no-flow kitchen…back to frustration again. Once this house sells, my design is in my head and ready to be put into my new home. Your channel is a great resource and helps with details I wouldn’t have otherwise thought about, like drawers instead of doors, countertop options, etc. Thanks for all your research!

So much good advice in this video! Inspired me to sort out the lighting in my own kitchen - now have ceiling downlights (white bezels definitely for the win!) and hard-wired under cabinet LEDs for task lighting the counter tops. So much happier with this set up and wished I'd had this done ages ago.

my husband and i moved into a new rental recently and due to emergency didnt get to be very choosy about where we moved. our kitchen is....workable, but its quite small and has one usable upper cabinet (but its so thickly painted shut im afraid to pry it open and damage something). base cabinets... they have one drawer. the corner cabinet works for pots and pans and whatnot, but right now my dishes (a set of four bowls, four plates, four cups, and three tupperware) are living on the top shelf of my pantry. I kinda feel like in rental having no uppers at all is a bad move.

Really good idea about the larder unit. I'm about to fit a new kitchen and we were all set to have the pull-out type. Having now listened to your idea about having individual pull-out drawers, we think it's a much better idea! Thanks for that. I really like your channel - full of really good ideas. Looking forward to the next one!

I hate dining areas. I think that they are the most useless use of space in any home. You use the dining table 3-4 times/year on special occasions unless you never work and have parties and gatherings the whole time. I would replace the table with a pool table. Much better for family entertainment and sometimes friends hanging out etc...

Like the no upper cabinet look BUT aging people have a hard time bending way down to crawl into lower cabinets. A window over the sink is a must. Love the window backsplash but must have something pretty to look at while doing cleanup. No brick walls or neighbors.

What name brands would you recommend me researching for a vented hob for my new build? It will be located on my kitchen island. Gas or induction? Does the ceramic cooktop scratch? Does anyone make a cooktop that doesn’t scratch?

Never would i get a sink in the island. It looks nice but it’s a complete mess when washing up pots and pans. Leaving them out to dry and they pile up. Does not look nice at all.

Hi Michael, design question: This is a small galley kitchen. On the outside wall (161") we have the sink in front of the centered window. To the right is the 30" cooktop with hood concealed in a 30" cabinet and an 18" x 40"H wall cabinet against the right wall. To keep the look symetrical, our designer is recommending a 48"W x 40"H cabinet to the left of the sink with 2- 24" doors. I don't think it is a good idea to have doors that open out so far past the countertop. Would it be better to mirror the other side with an 18" and 30" cabinet? Would so appreciate your input. Thanks.

Thanks for the video. We bought a house and for the last 5 years we thought rangehood was vented into roof space . Until we watched this video and realised it is a recirculated!! 😅 Point being, we have been quite happy with the performance of the recirculated one, even to the point we thought it was as good as extracted 😂
