As an only child and a Gen X/Millennial, I disagree with this. I didn’t have a silver spoon-but I am also black, so naturally I wouldn’t have the same privileges as others. I would ride my bike for hours and knew to return home a few minutes before the street lights came on! We had metal slides back then, our playgrounds had concrete, and don’t come home with a major injury! We had cocoa butter for that! Also, don’t put cocoa butter on before you go outside in the hot sun - apparently that was in the Boomer gen handbook! 😂❤ I wouldn’t trade my childhood for anything! We knew what freedom was! All we needed was a pack of Now and Laters, and our bikes!

Yeah that sounds about right. Only child here raised by an older parent but to top it all off a third wheel was included in the background who was more of a liability than I, my grandmother who was invalid her whole life. So I was stuck in such a weird complex situation as an only child of a single older mom AND a part time caregiver of a physically disabled grandmother. Two grown women off to themselves while I’m stuck in the middle, almost reminds me of a Thelma and Louise scenario. I would block it out as much as possible by staying away from the house as much as possible. I wanted permanent escape from this hell.

I was an only child and adopted. Sure, I was overprotected but I was very independent. I was a child of migrant parents and parents who divorced when I was young so that added some grit to me. I had to take the role of my father in a way since I felt my mother needed to be protected. I sort of resent this because I am a 'strong' woman who is very independent and this has caused some issues in romantic relationships because I feel like I can't rely on anyone but myself. Men tend not to be too appreciative of that lol

As an only child, it's devastating to know what I missed out on. My areas were completely neglectful, and dismissive. Now no family member ever regards me as family. It would have been nice to feel cared for. I guess it depends on the parents

Completely depends on the parents. Too many variables in this only child syndrome theory. The blanket statements of which are usually cast as judgments from people with siblings. Why else would people with siblings form opinions about you if you were an only child? Do you think they suppose that as the only child you were often the peacemaker between your fighting parents? Do you think they suppose that because you have no siblings, you took on the brunt of the pain in whatever drama caused by your parents? Do you think they suppose only child syndrome refers to no witnesses in an abusive and turbulent household? Well of course they don’t suppose any of that. People with siblings will forever think of you as the eternal spoiled rotten little shit and brag who got all the toys at Christmas. They don’t suppose that yes, you were an only child… but your father was drunk and commit suicide. And your mother was emotionally unavailable and met a new man and neglected you. They don’t think about have you have no siblings and the parts that really actually suck about not going through these indignities with someone else you could call a brother or sister. I feel like people with siblings later on get to joke and laugh about a turbulent childhood, and they get to spread that pain between them. At least. They have some sort of comradery. Another witness. You know what I’m saying? As an only child, I don’t feel like a dickhead rich kid only child with loving parents. You know what I mean?

13, 60 yr old parents, I’m pressured constantly. I’m in band, theatre, art, learning ASL, academic UIL, all honors, soccer, athletics, out of school training, FCCLA, they want me to do try orchestra now and maybe do martial arts. I can’t do it all, I can’t stay awake past 9:00, I can hardly get up in the morning and I’m burnt out already. “You’re so lucky” been told that my whole life and I have no idea how to respond still.
