The accent you are hearing is what most people in Canada call "the Newfie accent". But being of Irish ancestry myself (and I mean 100%, with my mother a Murphy and my father a Riordan) I have always recognized the Newfie accent as a charming Irish way of speaking. It's no mystery why the Newfies are loved all across Canada, without exception. And my god are they funny, fun to play sports with, fun to drink with, fun just to be with. And they have such a great work ethic that construction companies in Alberta will hire a person with that accent just because we know they will fit in very well. Trust me on this... I have done it! The 9/11 attacks didn’t just unify Americans but they united much of the world. I lived in a suburb of San Francisco at the time. One of the heroes who was on the San Francisco bound plane that crashed into the field in Pennsylvania was living in the same town as my children and I were. His name was Tom Burnett. I remember seeing a picture of his wife with her 3 children and my heart absolutely broke. I also had 3 young kids at the time and like her I have identical twin girls. I also have son and she has another daughter. Our children were about the same age too. Our little town suffered little direct loss related to any of the attacks but the entire country and our friends around the world grieved heavily. Years later I was sickened again when I learned that a classmate of my son who enlisted in the military was killed in combat in Afghanistan.I didn’t know him and he and my son had different friend groups. Still, I was again heartbroken for his loved ones and infuriated by the attacks as they began the years of “The War on Terror” - it was the reason that kid was even in combat. I can scarcely imagine the pain of all of the loved ones of each person (9/11 victims, military casualties from American and our Allies and those who died from breathing the toxic air in NYC) and I am reminded of the great sacrifice of all of them. I know this videois on a serious topic, but I have to comment on your reaction to the accent. That's a Newfoundland accent for you. On top of where they originated from, the accent differences are do to the size of the country. Canada is enormous, wider than the Atlantic ocean. Gander is about 1000km closer to Dublin Ireland, than it is to Vancouver British Columbia, on the west coast! I'm in British Columbia(you guys live closer to Gander than I do), and no one here sounds anything like that. Our accent sounds like that of many Americans.

As nice as this video is. It's short. And doesn't even begin to tell half the story of what really happened in gender. There's a 2 hour TV documentary. There's also a full Broadway show which tells the story beautifully. You should look them both up and see what really happened in gander. There's so much more to the story.

I love this story, it's very inspirational, but unfortunately they took a lot of liberties with the truth. There was no ultimatum to lower the flag by the British. The British were defeated at Fort McHenry September 15, 1814 and the war wasn't over till January 8, 1815, three and a half months later, after the Battle of New Orleans. There were no negotiations to release any military prisoners. Francis Scott Key went to secure the release of one person, a friend of his, the elderly Dr. William Beanes, a civilian non-combatant who had been taken prisoner by the British as they departed Washington, DC after burning the White House, the Capitol, and other government buildings. Key didn't go into Fort McHenry that morning after the bombardment. He was held by the British for two days after the bombardment before he was released. The shelling that night wasn't non-stop. A nor'easter blew in and all the rain dampened the gunpowder and fuses so the cannons couldn't be fired. Patriot's bodies didn't hold up the flag. US casualties were 4 killed and 24 wounded, and nobody went and held the flag up, it was never knocked down. The British, however, lost about 330 men when we managed to fire back when the British ships got too close. So, there's a lot not that's true in this story. My love and respect for the flag is not because of this story, but for the freedom the flag represents and because of my love and respect for the men who fought in all the wars to keep it flying. Also, the notion that when the flag waves in the breeze the wind is created by the last dying breath of every American soldier who died to defend it and the freedom it represents.

The military isn’t just guns and bombs. The military can aid in medical assistance, and humanitarian relief, etc. that’s what he means about the military is needed for peace.
