I'm so glad to find other people that actually agree with me on this. It LOOKS good, but it's really just not all that amazing. I only remember one person's name from the first one and it's because Jake is just the most generic name ever. What was the plot? No one knows, but it looked pretty so who cares? What's the message? Don't colonize? Don't cut down trees? Don't kill natives? Who is the movie even for? Most people aren't cutting down the rainforest or killing natives so the only thing the average person is going to get out of it is the visuals. The only people it's actually targeted at aren't going to listen anyway. Sure it was well done, but they added so many plot holes and added a bunch of stuff that really didn't make sense and people ignore it because it looks nice. I tend to be an overly critical person, especially when it comes to media, and I care a lot about the meaning and message behind movies, but I also tend to ignore visuals, and because of that I hate Avatar. They had a good concept, but it doesn't feel finished, especially when you look at it along with the sequel. They focused so much on the message that they forgot to make it relevant and relate it to the audience. I don't mind that other people enjoy it. It's an easy thing to turn your brain off to and just look at the pictures, but as soon as you get to the actual plot you will not be able to get me to shut up.

Want to know why i think avatar is so great? It is the only big blockbuster ever made with an explicit anti western/american capitalist/empire message. Its a very realistic depiction of western imperialism, (but obviously dramatized for a sci fi action movie). The RDA is a proxy not just for the Europeans genociding the native americans, but for the american military industial complex, and our conquest for resources and profit at all costs. It is a very simple sci fi action movie with familiar tropes, but its a very well executed sci fi action adventure movie. With, in my opinion, a very well executed message, that isnt necessarily meant to change peoples minds on the spot, but to plant seeds of anti capitalism, and environmentalism in young minds by pulling people in with the beautiful world and visuals, having them fall in love with the world, and then see it destroyed by people doing exactly what we are doing in/to our own world and people. Avatar is a true, modern day story with a sci fi action movie coat of paint. Of course, if you arent a hardcore anticapitalist like me, you may not see it that way. As far as why the RDA dont just bomb the navi from orbit, why does we not just bomb the countries we want resources from? (sometimes we actually do, but usually we take a different route). Its explicitly stated near the beginning of the movie that killing the natives looks bad. They would prefer not to do it in order to maintain public support, but ultimately, the RDA are there to make a profit (just like america in real life). The science team and their avatars are there to study the life on the planet. Nuking it from orbit would eliminate our ability to study the alien life and learn about an intelligent alien culture. All life on the planet is literally connected, and the navi can upload and download data into the planets mind. It's incredibly scientifically interesting, so obviously scientists want to study it. It makes perfect sense if you think about it for more than a second. Oh, and the second movie is an absolute masterpiece that added so much depth to the colonels' (villain military guy) character, and im really looking forward to seeing his character arc throughout the series. Im thinking hes going to have a change of heart somewhere down the line. Aywa has work to do in quaritchs heart now that he has a navi body that can connect to the mind of the planet (aywa).

Also, being educated on just how many atrocities my country (usa) has carried out for profit and world domination, and how much environmental destruction is required to maintain capitalist ways of life makes avatars message a lot more clear. Also, district 9 is a great movie, but I like avatar more.

I don't want it to be the next star wars, star wars isn't good. Make 3 movies and call it. Please, for the love of god. Edit: having said that, I'm not one of those people that think that terrible shows (LOTR) detracts from the excellence of the movies on the same subject matter. I'm just sick of seeing cash grabs.

It seems that it’s more Legendary’s decision on whether or not a third film is green lit seen as they put in the most money for part 2 (80% vs WB’s 20%) and they and DV are skeptical, especially with how the second book goes. Plus the tv show Dune prophesy (from memory) is moving away from actual canon and seems to be very loosely based on the Brian Herbert books so whether it’ll be any good or not is up for debate and if that flops then the third film is even more at risk :|

I'm gonna have to say. You're probably too young and have seen too little to really know. Not that I'm trying to be offensive or insulting. There's just nothing THAT special about it. And I'm saying that as a long-time Dune fan. I even think it's a great movie. It's just not anything that hasn't been seen before. Neither in graphics or story. Large scale battles aren't anything new. We've seen those all the way back in Star Wars Episode One. And the story may be an adaptation but in big picture it's pretty similar to the original Dune movie. You should never underestimate the reality of the situation; It's the studios that hold the IP. And they are notoriously bad at creating new stories. The likely scenario - even if Dune changes sci-fi in some new way - is that the studios will pick an activist director and progressive writing team and basically Disney it; Make it lame and put a chick in it while attempting to lecture the audience. Which will then be added to the pile of stuff nobody watches. Just look at Game of Thrones season 8. The moment the story of the series went past the books entirely, they completely boned it because they can't really create new stories themselves. They can only adapt other things that already exist. Hence why most of Marvel worked really well; The writers there had entire libraries of comic books to use as reference and inspirations.

Dune, imo has created a world and aesthetic that hasn't been seen since A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. Coupled with the music score by Williams and now Zimmer it's the perfect SF movie storm.
