Hiding in plain sight! Can this be clear-coated to preserve the color, or will it fade again over time, with no prospect to retain the purple (semi) permanently?
@MerschWerks16 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, UV light will make it turn back to brown over time. A good clear finish with a UV protection could help that slow that process a bit.

Very nice bowl. I like how you do that color on the outside. Gives it character

Indeed! I enjoy adding some color to these projects without sacrificing the natural grain pattern.

Really like that blue! What dye did you use?
@MerschWerksАй бұрын
Thanks! I have typically been using Rit dye on my projects. This particular shade of blue is aquamarine.

What an awesome generational toy. This is the kind of item I could see moving from generation to generation (as the tonka dump trucks did in my family). 2nd time I have tripped over your channel and finally subscribed. Love to see wood turning, although I am far more likely to be found in front of a metal lathe. If I may make a suggestion, you are an obvious craftsman, do more wide audience wood working along with your excellent turning videos. Not everyone has a lathe, or your skillset when it comes to turning. You might find your audience grows greatly with a little broader scope. For me, I love the wood turning, something I have just never been that good at, so I love to watch master work.

Thanks for the subscription and the compliments! I have a handful of projects lined up and there are several non-turning related ideas coming soon. I really appreciate the feedback, thanks!

That was a surprise. I couldn’t see where it was going. Very nicely made sir. Where did these originate from?
@MerschWerks2 ай бұрын
Thank you! These originated in France and are typically not made from wood. I wanted to test making one, and after a week, I'm not super pleased with the results... Maple may be too porous for this... Perhaps these should just be made from ceramic, lol.

For this video I wanted to try out building a prototype slim ring box. I went through a few changes throughout the project. The original staining idea just didn't look right until I sanded it down to have the weathered look to it. Don't forget to Subscribe for more weekly videos!

Nice mallet! But I'll bet it doesn't work as well as your hatchet. Why? Because it's not heavy enough. And it won't take long for the drive center to beat the crap out of the mallet. It's a physics thing. What I've been using for years is a gnarly piece of dogwood limb about 3 inches in diameter and 18 inches long, squared off on one end. I turned the other end down a little to make it easier to grip. Instead of swinging it, I hold it vertically above the drive center and, for the most part, just let it drop. The end grain of the limb is the driving surface. Just a couple of licks - clunk clunk - and it's done. It stands on its end at the end of my lathe when not in use. For grins and giggles, try driving the center with a piece of firewood held so the end grain strikes the center. It needs to be a hard wood like oak or hickory; pine or poplar, for example, will not work very well. The key is that the driver needs to be a lot heavier than the drive center. - Old dude
