His character is much easier to understand if you subscribe to the theory that Billy is a closeted gay teen who is terrified that anyone will find out who he really is, and so does everything possible to convince the world and himself that he's the ultimate straight macho guy. It explains why he's obsessed with Steve (probably has a crush on him), and why he flirts with women decades older then he is (if you're not attracted to women, an older woman isn't any less attractive then a young woman).

Remember his mom left him when he was a kid. He has mom abandonment issues and his mom looked like Mrs. Wheeler. He also had a poster in his bedroom with this ‘type’ of pretty blonde woman. She’s a symbol of lost unconditional love that he’s trying to unconsciously acquire again. His attraction to her is trauma-based. And Mrs. Wheeler told Nancy in a separate scene that she regretted not perusing her dreams. So her lack of fulfillment is not living up to her full potential and sacrificing herself to raise a family. Their attraction to one another is based on their wounds and unfulfilled needs and desires.

Dose anyone else thing the whole Karen/billy thing taken seriously in s3 was a really weirdass choice?? Like in s2 it was just a throw away, cheeky stifler's mum, type thing. But then here in s3 they made it serious and it just comes off stylistically wrong. most of the show is pretty family pg, and then you put a sexual tension age gap affair that would feel more suited to a show on bravo
