They were great together, but I prefer Herb Ellis w OP, especially when Ray Brown rounded out the trio and there were no drums. (Nat Cole’s trio w/out drums is another favorite.) Herb and Joe were great together.

Man, that sounds phenomenal! I just found an ft 140 at a Goodwill a few hundred miles away online and bought it. Anxious for it to be delivered next week. It’s made in Japan, the serial number has only 6 digits. How do I tell what year it was manufactured? Thanks!

@@michaelbergeron6179 Thanks for your comment. I did research my FT-140 years ago, but don’t recall a way to determine by serial number how old a specific copy is. If believe I got an approximate production date based on characteristics (label…etc.). I do recall determining that mine was produced in the early 70s. Sorry brother, that’s the best I can do. There are discussions on various forums/sites that might help.

Thanks Chris. Sometimes the best docs have less flash and no CGI. I grew up around two Army Air Corp vets…my Dad (he was almost 36 when I was born) and my uncle. Watching this reminds me of many of their stories. Glad it had a positive impact on you.

Great video, love your playing. What do you think would be a reasonable price to pay for a used one in good condition? Thank you!

Thanks for your comment. It’s surprising what a good sound (with a little tweaking and the right strings) that one can get out of well-made “cheap” guitars. I bought this in 2018 at Earl Teat’s Music near Dover Air Base in Delaware. I paid less than $140 then. I would guess in “used good condition” you might find one (in todays economy) around the $80-100 mark. Have fun making music.

Nice! I just picked up a 77-79 FT140 at the Goodwill. It's in very good condition. Just needs adjusting. I had some John Pearse 80/20 Bluegrass strings from about 6 years ago. They are a little heavy on the wound side. I will try the Diaddario 12-53 you are using. I am sure surprized at how good a laminate backed bolt on neck sounds. It''s sweet what the years will do to the acoustics of a wood guitar!

Thanks Jon. The high E string sounds off on mine…and the frets are pretty worn out. The saddle is a solid ivory replacement (1976) and uncompensated. In the past I ran medium gauge strings but figure I should give the neck a rest given her age. Hope you get lots of fun out of your old Epi.

AMAZING! So passionate, and creative, and swings at that tempo. As a piano player many years traveled a couple hours to hear Joe and Oscar, on arriving found out Oscar was not able to make the gig, Joe p[ayed solo, dissapoint to learn, but Joe was amazing

What strings are you using? I wonder how to make my MA1 sounds warmer like yours
@jackthomas2693
@jackthomas2693 10 ай бұрын
The strings were at least 2 years old at the time, but they are D’Addario Phosphor Bronze Custom Lights. As you point out…they do combine with this particular guitar for a warm and mellow tone. Thanks for your comment.

Hello Mike. This may have been released under different titles. This copy was simply titled “Fighter Aces of WWII”. I picked-up my copy at a Kmart in Central Virginia back in ‘86. I grew up under family members who were Army Air Corps vets. My uncle flew a P38 in the Pacific. Still can’t shake the interest. Clarence “Bud” Anderson is still alive. 101 years old. What a great generation!
