My Uncle Carlo D'Antonio was a previous owner of Banzai up until 2008 I believe. He was the one on MVY that had much of the interior in his Barn that you mention here. Sadly, he recently passed away. He loved that boat. Beautiful.

Thanks for the information. It's wonderful to have the family history of such a classic vessel.

That’s amazing, how tough is the material? I’d be worried about a sharp stick bumping me in the middle of the ocean! How much does one of those cost?

Wow! Lin Pardey. So good to know she's still around. I read "Cruising in Seraffyn" around 1977 right after I got out of the army and ended up living in Southeast Florida. With all the boats around Miami and live-aboards in Coconut Grove, I got bit big time by the cruising bug. As the other Seraffyn books came out, and being an avid reader of "Cruising World" magazine, I tried every which way I could to either find a boat and refurbish it or just build one on my own so I could cruise the world, too. Well, that dream never happened. Marriages, and the cost of living took away just about every penny I made and it was that way for a long time. Then, I finally got a great, decently paying job and things started going my way, but the cruising dream was more a dim memory than a burning desire. I did manage to acquire a perfect cruising boat -- a steel-hulled Colvin Gazelle -- but the work demands and a terrible accident that happened to my wife kept me busy every second of the day for a couple more years. My wife made a complete recovery and now I'm retired, but some of the years of hard physical work and Father Time (I'm now age 68) has left me in a situation where I can't even single-hand the schooner any more. It seems that now that I have the vessel, the time and the income to do it, I still had to quash any dreams of crossing oceans. But, it isn't all over yet. I plan to downsize from the schooner and finish the refurbishing job on a little 25-foot Westerly Centaur I've had hidden away here on my farm for the past 10 years or so, and still go "cruising." But it'll be a highly modified adventure mostly consisting of nosing into every interesting warterfront town, quiet creek, and anchorage I find as I spend the rest of my days exploring the Chesapeake Bay. At some point, I'll do the "DelMarVA circumnavigation" -- but that won't happen 'til I've worked my way down to the mouth of the Bay. I plan to take my "Seraffyn" books and my collection of Lin and Larry's DVDs along with me. I'll probably also load in some art supplies so I can sketch and paint some of the more interesting things I find on the Chesapeake Bay. And it's all because of that dream Lin and Larry started with their books so long ago. Thanks!!!

I can’t wait. Sounds interesting. I hope this prompts some real discussion on the current state of KZfaq sailing/boating/boat building content. Will you address how-to vs reality tv format? Or the reality of creating and operating a KZfaq sailing/boating channel? It’s an often times unpleasant topic. Ask me how I know. 😎

On my maiden voyage, I steered by hand for 2,000 miles. On my passage I did teach myself sheet to tiller steering but could have done with a wind vane. If anybody has a second hand one for sale, let me know. Fair winds.

I met you and Wayne in the 90s at a Strictly Sail show in Chicago after attending your seminars. I also started following project Atticus from the beginning some 4-5 years now. I kind of land in the middle age bracket in my 50s. I dropping out of work early just finishing a two-year refit of my westsail 32. Nice to see you guys collaborating and hoping to join you out there somewhere someday. You've both made following your dreams a reality early in life. And possible for dreamers like myself to go for it. ❤

@@TheSailingChannel Thank you! I bought and read the Hiscock’s sailing books when I was in my early teens in South Africa in late 60’s, they were so inspiring for me and really got me interested in sailing. I still have those books today, and I am about to start re-reading them. They are absolutely priceless storytelling. 👍🏻🙏🏻

Suspension of disbelief is one thing, but this guy was NOT an experienced/prepared sailor: No EPIRB Life raft not accessible No ditch bag Fibreglass doesn't break that easily on Bluewater boats (can be stronger than steel) Seemed to be a story of a man who cannot cope in the world and tries (amateurishly) to run away from it, then the world kicks his behind anyway: almost as if he intended to commit suicide...🤔 I tried watching the film (and I love character type films) but it was too full of ego to be a good one. The based on true story of the woman who survived at sea (with little experience) and sailed into Hawaii after losing her boyfriend overboard and getting dismasted is much, much better (still not great)

Hello, how are you doing ? I was on your boat in 1988, you were anchored off a little island in Venezuela, my wife and I were hiding on your boat, because the police went by and we had not cleared in yet, remember ? We were on a 46 foot steel ketch and just came back from Brazil. Those were the good old days ! Happy sailing.

What about sheet to tiller steering? I like a wind vane and all but, your sails will keep the boat on course just as well with some bungee cords and the sheet on opposite sides of the tiller. Green as can be a a hell of a lot cheaper/ less complicated. Besides, if the apparent wind changes, you have to adjust the vane anyway so what is the point? Just adjust the sheet and bungee cords to suit the new angle/course.
@grahamlongley82982 жыл бұрын
Sheet to tiller is rubbish system. Takes ages to fiddle to get it right. It does not work on a fin keeled boat like mine which is directionally unstable & cannot be balanced. A vane gear can be set up in seconds & will work accurately. No constant adjustment etc. also if you look at some videos of sheet to tiller systems you will see the person making regular tweeks. That is NOT self steering. Self steering is setting it up & going below for a kip for a couple of hours, confident the boat is Ok. Sheet to tiller precludes wheel steered yachts whereas vane steering can be used.
