Never saw it nor heard of this film. It was suggested by algorithm. Looks like I missed something important in 1988. 😮

When I was a kid there was one big aspect of this movie that I never understood, and I have quite literally watched this 100 times. I used to let it run in the background while I worked on my homework or cleaned my bedroom. Initially, when Priscilla brings up the individual OTZ ships, it seems like she is just bringing them up through the database of the log from Captain Brown's ship. It doesn't seem to suggest that the ships are actually in front of them at the time. When do the ships on the screen go from being something that Priscilla is finding through the record and the logs of what she was given from the other ship, and become actual ships that are in front of them and they need to destroy?

I was 17 when this came out, a burgeoning computer scientist, and like the computer scientist on the show also crushing hard on the Luz Sansone character. I also dreamed of working for NASA and loved that this had people my age as main characters. I have tried for years to remember the name of this to share this with my wife and kids but I’m not sure they (or even I) would appreciate it as much now given how dated some of it looks even though it still has a fairly novel concept. Thank you so much for sharing, it is different from what I remembered and part of what had me stymied in my search is I thought Luz was played by Meredith Salenger also of Disney fame.

This feels like it was a made for TV project. It would likely be called a mini series these days. Some aspects were a little predictable but not bad overall.

Every decision they make is the dumbest thing possible. Especially the "genius" kid, he's the worst of them all. And how are the going off course all the time when they are supposed to be following the track, as per their explanation of their deep space travel?

So , there is some knowledge of biology . I was 5 years into my marriage when this movie was broadcast . Walt Disney . Wonderful world of color . There is so much of this movie that could still happen today . But today space exploration seems to have stopped by humans . Now we send robots to do the exploration .

I want to make a movie like this, but today. With 80's future tech, 80's projected future problems, and 80's political and social tropes being explored.

I saw this as a kid on satellite tv , it was a mix of Star Trek and Battlestar. I did not make it past pilot. Here is why, it was more child fantasy than drama tv..

The great thing about space Travelers once you hit the speed, that's your maximum. You can turn off the engine and travel for free. For millions of years, if you want as long as you don't get into a gravitational pull, you will forever go straight with the engines off.

Our tastes in visual entertainment have changed greatly since 1988 as well as our standards for technological gizmos to look and seem convincing and not be distractingly silly. To even market it and/or stream it on Disney Plus they'd have to make it UHD standard for today's audience and invest a lot of $ into updating the CGI and the sound and whatnot. Why do that when there are better SciFi properties out there to exploit? If you do a space thing and you're Disney, it had better have all sorts of tie-ins and possibilities for the Disney Parks, or it's wasted investment. And if they tried to do it and make it into some sort of attraction, it would only be a weak competitor to Star Wars, and what is the point of that? And imagine how dated all this looks now...hairstyles and so forth. Who but adults who watched it as kids would be interested in stuff like that? A sufficiently large audience is just not there. The ROI is just not there. Enjoy it here on KZfaq.
