im pretty sure that if you add lemon juice to the liquid ,it will also help with the preservation of the syrup too ! im thinking 1 or 1 and a half table spoons of lemon juice from the bottle . this will lower the ph and the lower the ph the harder for bacteria to grow.
@GrowingUpHerbal
@GrowingUpHerbal 10 ай бұрын
Yes, lowering the pH can help extend the shelf life a bit, but not to the extent that alcohol will (as lemon juice is only around 5-6% acid). You'd still have to keep an eye on it for mold growth after a few weeks.

Thank you so much for your informative video. I have been searching for a way to make my herbal syrups shelf stable without compromising the quality. If I wanted to make this without alcohol, could I substitute a glycerine-based tincture instead? What would that do to the shelf life?
@GrowingUpHerbal
@GrowingUpHerbal Жыл бұрын
A glycerite should be able to be substituted for the alcohol tincture, as glycerites have a good shelf life, almost comparable to an alcohol tincture. Most glycerites are made with a 60/40 or 70/30 blend of glycerin to water, again, comparable to the alcohol/water content of a tincture. Because glycerin isn’t as strong of a preservative as alcohol, I would use 50% glycerite, 25% herbal decoction, and 25% herbal honey instead. That should leave you with enough glycerin in your final syrup to help it be shelf-stable for up to a year. Hope that helps!

If you had girls too, would you put all the sizes together (like boys and girls size 4-5), or get separate bins for storing hand-me-downs? I ask because we have a four children (boys and girls) but are welcome to having more, but the amount of storage boxes is a lot! I separate by boy/girl. Thank you for the idea to store by categories in bags. That will be a big help.
@GrowingUpHerbal
@GrowingUpHerbal Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think I would store by size as opposed to by gender, simply because it is less boxes to keep up with. I also sort through the clothes in each box beforehand anyway to separate shirts, pants, dress shirts, pajamas, etc., So I would start by separating girl clothes from boy clothes, and then separate those into different types of clothes and go from there. Hope all that makes sense! And thanks for your comment!

Love this. Been an herbalist 30 years and always love learning little tidbits I never knew! I learned a lot about this herb form Matt Wood but I never really used this remedy very much and have been exploring it more lately. Been doing the one drop dose under my tongue and wow does it work (using the seed tincture at the moment and want to explore the flower). I can tell when I take it and when I don't. Using it to help with some oxalate issues I have. I swear I feel them moving down and out. Good stuff. Also looked into as birth control; not for myself (I am past that window) but for others. Looks promising when used correctly for those purposes. Thank you for this, this was really well done and am going to share this video!!!

LOL! Okay, you're right in that I shouldn't have used the term "air plant" because that can be confused with actual epiphytes, but you missed what I said it right after that about QAL being a "air element" plant, which is what I actually was referring to. Elementally speaking, QAL falls in the "air" sign because it grows high in the air, is lightweight and wispy, has a fresh, clean fragrance, so on and so forth. Thanks for clarifying, and for the record, while I'm not an actual botanist, I do have some botany education. ;)

@GrowingUpHerbal
@GrowingUpHerbal 2 жыл бұрын
Vitamin E is usually added to oil-based preparations to help the oil from going rancid. It doesn't have the same effect on water-based preparations. If you want those to have a longer shelf-life than refrigeration provides, you have to add a preservative to them. Hope that helps!

Being new to this, be kind with my "newbie" question....doesn't that give it a strong alcohol smell and taste ?
@GrowingUpHerbal
@GrowingUpHerbal 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! I don't think it has an alcohol scent, but it does have a "sweet alcohol bite" as far as taste goes. Basically, it tastes sweet due to the honey. You can definitely taste the flavor of the herbs as well. And it will have a slight alcohol flavor and heat to it as well. If you want to avoid that, you could make a 2:1 ratio herbal syrup with 2 parts herbal honey and 1 part herbal decoction. This won't have as long of a shelf life as a syrup with alcohol added to it, but it will last longer than a standard herbal syrup. Hope that's helpful!

Thanks for sharing this beautiful video! So much important & good info there. I love your house's old-style interior & your calm energy. I'm just finishing making some cough syrup here & checking out how others make it. I love to stay open & keep learning. One thing I started to do lately is that before I strain the herbal infused honey I just boil some water in a pot or kettle & place the whole jar of the herbal honey in it. With the jar & lid on it. This way I can literally just have to pour it out of the jar. It saves a lot of time trying to get it out of the jar & later cleaning all that's been involved. I hope you'll find it useful ♥ Keep up the good spirit. Much Blessings ♥

I know homemade insecticidal soaps made with dish soap is super popular and all over the internet, but dish soap is actually horrible for plants. It's not "non-toxic". Rather, the chemicals used to make dish soap is quite toxic to plants. Dish soap isn't really soap, it's a detergent, meaning it's a mixture of different chemicals designed to better dissolve grease. Nothing wrong with using it for dishes, but it is not something plants should be exposed to. Furthermore, all plants have a waxy cuticle to protect themselves from pests. Dish soap is great at dissolving grease (remember the oil spills) but more importantly, it will eat away that waxy cuticle, opening the plant up to more infestations. So many people spray their plants with their dish soap mixture then find that their plant gets another infestation a few weeks later, and don't make the connection between that initial spraying and subsequent infections. The best choice is to simply just buy a real insecticidal soap. Yes, it's significantly more expensive (but cheaper if you buy a concentrate), and more importantly, it's safer for plants.
@GrowingUpHerbal
