What would have happened HAD Clara picked up playing virtuoso pop piano & ad-lib jazz à la Beegie Adair. An enigma to me how someone like her could have spent her entire life playing the same sheep music up and down 1001 x over.

The intonation, overall but especially of the brass, especially the horns - is *excruciatingly* bad; just about the worst I have ever heard on a recording.

Besides Boston, Cinci, NY there must be many symphonies that have pops seasons. PBS where are you?

Fiedler: Great musicianship, great management, great history. But there are other great/good conductors. What he had was a personality, a charm that went out past the sound. People loved to interview him. countless bio-sketches. That's personality. What conductor can match that now. Sure they have musicianship but they don't have that carisima, that spark.

I also recommend the excellent Vienna State Opera Orchestra version conducted by Mario Rossi, soloist Miriam Solovieff. Originally released on VANGUARD in 1956 & then in 1958 in the UK on FONTANA (BIG 302-L). This early stereo recording was so good that VANGUARD released it in the USA as a stereo demonstration disc

I have come to love the Mozart piano concertos, but especially the earlier ones--where simplicity and directness are virtues.

I've always had this crazy notion that the final movement should actually be Sunset instead of the storm. Even though it's a quiet finish, I'm not sure why he decided to make the storm the last. It's all exciting when the rain stops, but then you're in pitch darkness, soaking wet with a mule. I've done some conducting and if I were to program this I would try it, despite any cries of heresy.

Leonard Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic is as good as this one. After all Koussevitzky and Bernstein were very close friends and Bernstein took a lot of from him at the beginning of his career.

As RCA Victor finally introduced microgroove 33-1/3 rpm discs in 1950, a number of the early releases were taken from 78-rpm recordings such as this one. Yes, Koussevitzky was a master when it came to the great symphonies such as this memorable one, which is so filled with wonderful melodies.

My friend Dave is listening to it in a paradise land of Havre-Saint-Pierre while having brunch. I wish I could be with him. Sometimes only sun can travel where we want to go! Luminous music like this somehow connect people over distance. Happy birthday Dave. True my friend, one candle on the cake is enough. We live only once. That word of your mother (who just turned 95) no one's can make it sing better than Mozart! Cheers
