Goo Gone (lighter fluid for an old style cigarette lighter) might work. Use an old sock or other fabric, soak the fabric like you're doing with the kitchen roll, but then hold the soaked fabric against the stains, and leave it pressed there for a minute or 2. The other option is SEMS upholstery paint, which comes in a large selection of colors. You could just repaint those back sides, either in dark gray, to match, or a dull black.

Hey great stuff. I replaced the plastic cup, and it has improved the gear change on mu Sprinter. I might still buy the whole gear change as you did as there is a bit of play in it when I go into reverse, I think it is just the age of the van, it's a 2015. The cables have been replaced. So next is to check the weight mechanism / counterweight and plastic link. Can I ask where you bought the plastic link from? Hope to see another vlog from you, stay well and stay safe.
@beaulunaedvantures2 күн бұрын
Hi thanks, yes I found the same. After replacing the plastic cup/bush the difference was massive which was brilliant, however it still had a couple of small issues. Mainly like you say due to the general age and wear of all the other components. I’m now just outside Calais, back in the UK tomorrow after a 3 month 5500 mile trip through France, Spain, Andorra and Portugal and it’s been brilliant. It very occasionally crunches slightly going into second gear, but considering it’s now done 274,000 miles and I had to really rag it on some of the crazy hairpin’s on Andorra’s mountains it’s doing well 😁 The small black plastic link came from the Mercedes main dealer - picked it up at the same time as the counterweight, can’t remember the exact cost it was £3 something plus vat 👍 Cheers Ken take care 😊

Hi Ryan, there are two versions for sale online you’re right. I didn’t know which one to buy so went for the white one. If I did it again I’d get the grey as that’s the one that was in there originally. It works fine and I’m not sure why there are two types/colours. The white may have been used on the VW Crafter or the 2006-2010 Sprinter but I’m not sure why there are two different designs. If you can pull up the gaiter before ordering and see whether the one on yours is grey or white and order the exact replacement 👍 Good luck

Hi thanks for the upload, it’s been very helpful, I was wondering about the plastic parts at the end of the linkage that push fit on to the gear box under the van. Did you use the old ones as the linkage I’m thinking on buying from a MB dealership doesn’t appear to have these plastic push on clips supplied according to the picture? Thanks again 👍

Hi David, the black clips at the gearbox end came with the secondhand cables I bought, but I know they are not included when buying the cables from main dealer and need to be bought separately. If you ask at the Mercedes parts desk they will be able to give you those too. Just out of interest have you a price for the new cables from MB? Hi, I connected the monitor red power lead to the reversing lights cable which was white with a blue stripe, I connected it above the side sliding door and drilled a small hole to get a 4mm self tapping screw to one of the beams across the inner roof of the van as an earth for the black cable - sorry that wasn’t clear in the video. This means that the camera and monitor only have power when reverse gear is selected.

How did you power and ground the monitor? I've bought a kit for my crafter and the extending lead has two yellow Jack's, one male and one female which must be the connection to the camera extending cable, and an additional three tiny cables, black, red and blue which I assume must be for powering, grounding and the blue cable I'm unsure about. Hi, just found your channel, I have a 2014 sprinter by myself and the gears are very stiff. Did you find a big improvement after the cables and oil change? Thanks
@beaulunaedvantures8 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks. Same year as ours 😁 we were having major issues trying to select gears, mainly 1st, 2nd and reverse. The gear lever would have to by rammed into these gears and crunched into them. The reverse lights and camera would come on trying to select 1st gear and going through the gears was a pretty miserable experience. The biggest change was replacing the gear selector bush in the dash mounted gear selection mechanism (that’s what I call it anyway). Changing the gearbox oil made no real difference on our van, but it was good to do for maintenance I think. If your having issues with stiffness selecting all the gears I’d say the cables would be a good place to start for sure. And changing the gearbox oil is a relatively simple procedure so might also be worth a go too. Let me know how you get on 👍

Spraying a solvent cleaner won’t do a lot, it has to travel too far and it’s evaporating as soon as it leaves the nozzle, and some elbow grease is needed besides. If you really want to clean your EGR it’s pretty simple to take the EGR cooler off on your engine, that allows access to then clean the EGR itself without having to take it off. Usually though it’s the metal transition tube that is more badly affected / usually seriously caked up or even blocked, much more so than the EGR parts. Clean both and fit a new air filter (genuine Merc or Mann).
@beaulunaedvantures8 ай бұрын
I didn’t know that about the evaporation of the product. The information regarding the metal transition tube is interesting, think I’ve seen someone on KZfaq Clean it out with a guitar wire attached to a cordless drill. I also watched them clean their air intake system with 2.5 litres of off car/van DPF cleaner sprayed directly into the air intake. Looked a bit harsh but I tried it and it worked much more effectively. Did it right before an oil service and changing the air filter (used Mann) and it’s running sweet as a nut now. Thanks for the advice I appreciate it 👍😁

@beaulunaedvantures9 ай бұрын
Hi again! Yes I did use a genuine replacement cable, however it wasn't new. It came with the second hand gear mechanism I bought from eBay recently and replaced on the van in the last video. It was more to see if there was any difference on selecting 2nd gear, but I'm coming to the conclusion that there is gearbox damage causing that issue. It is only really slight and not geting any worse so I'll live with that for now. How is your repair/adjustment of your gears holding up? And where are you looking to head to next?

It’s difficult isn’t it when things like this start to play up and get worse. The biggest difference I got was replacing a socket/bush thing inside the gear mechanism. That really made a massive difference to making it easier to select the gears. There’s a link in this videos notes to that video. If your van has a similar set up for the gears that would be a great place to start, before any permanent damage is done to the gearbox. For a mornings work and around £30 it’s well worth a go. Beyond that, this video and replacing the cables I’ll be leaving it to the professionals 😊 good luck I hope you get it sorted and it’s not too expensive 👍 @julianreynolds

Following with interest. We have a 2006 Ducato and I have exactly the same issue, finding first gear even when stationary is getting more difficult. 3rd to 2nd...no way. I've have the cables greased and sprayed some white grease inside the gear stick mechanism all without any improvement. I hoping it's not something expensive like a clutch or gearbox issue.

Update...FIXED Today I removed the plastic cover below the steering column so I could access the plastic cover around the gear shift My problem was getting into 1st and 2nd gears, it appears that when in neutral the gear stick was going too far left and not lining up with the gate correctly. I noticed an adjustment mechanism on the right-hand side. Underneath there is a locking lever that just required pushing down and then pressing in the adjustment lever and lining up the stick with first gear, released the spring lever locked it back in place. My gear selection is now perfect... Better than when I purchased it. Hopefully this info will help other Van owners.

Hi, this is the exact problem we had. This part helped initially, and now after driving 4000 miles it is still improved, but there is still an issue occasionally getting into first gear. Replacing the part will make an improvement, and selecting gear is still better than it was, but it’s not perfect.
