What are your thoughts on the sportspal copycats like Mohawk. Can you use the same materials on them, such as ribs and sponsons? Awesome videos by the way. Wish I knew a long time ago how a little elbow grease could spruce up old sportspals, gave away a couple ruff looking ones back then.

@GettenanyOutdoorsSportspal 7 күн бұрын
@razah2339 the larger motor can bend the motor mount, it's only aluminum and has limits. On a wide transom there's no issues on weight, but the pointed model with the aluminum mount is the weakest point. 1.5 hp would be no issue though

Why didn't you put any sealant in between the layers when you sandwiches them together? Honest question, not a criticism.
@GettenanyOutdoorsSportspal
@GettenanyOutdoorsSportspal 15 күн бұрын
@nathanscheuman4263 no problem , great question I like drilling and screwing without sealant as it makes a dandy mess flying around. It does get sealed inside and out, and to put in between is basically up to whoever is installing the repair kit. I have had more than my share of that stuck to me.

I always learn a lot from your videos so I hope you are going to document the refurb on KZfaq. I just bought a 39 year old Sportspal for $100. It had nearly no dents but all the foam needed replaced. I thought that was a steal of a price until I started the refurb. After lifting the old foam it revealed pretty bad corrosion on the floor of the canoe in a few spots. Pits probably half was through the aluminum sheet metal. To halt the corrosion I wire wheeled, primed and painted the interior of the boat. Then filled the canoe with a few inches of water and found slow leaks on the nose and tail center ridge just as it ramps upward. I bought some 3M 5200 marine sealant to fix the leaks. Now I have to order the new foam which runs around $450 USD shipped for everything (2 seats, sponsons, liner). I'm going to try to reuse the ribs although it was suggested they should be replaced due to their age. $12 a piece x 23 if the ribs need replaced. If you enjoy the labor, it's a nice project refurbing these boats. If it needs new foam and you are short on free time I suggest buying a new boat. After seeding how this aircraft aluminum can corrode I don't think I'll be taking this Sportspal into salt water.

@davehall338 ya the foam is almost useless in the repair kit. Only for someone who hacks a chunk out of the liner to put the patch in. After watching this I was inspired to put a thick layer of 3M 5200 along the seam of the nose srem and across the peak of the nose srem. Was coving the peak of the nose srem a mistake? I a little concerned what will happen to the 5200 as it gets drug across rocks. I see you omitted putting Adthane on the peak of the srem. According to the instructions, 3M 5200 takes 7 days to dry, how long does Adthan take to dry?

I've heard it works, never tried it. The screws are just a plain 5/16" sheet metal screw. Just have to make sure screws are completely covered to prevent oxidation, steel + aluminum = not great. Good luck

I have a 1984 Sportspal canoe that leaks in the area of the front center rib just as the rib starts to transition upwards. I think the gasket material is dry and brittle and the dents on the rib don't help. This is the spot that gets struck first as one hits a rock in shallow water. To fix this leak should I first try to tighten the rivets or should I just go strait to the marine sealant. Or maybe add rivets in-between the current rivets? Thank you very much.
@GettenanyOutdoorsSportspal
@GettenanyOutdoorsSportspal Ай бұрын
If it is only slightly leaking on one of the seams, I would cover the problem seam with marine sealant, just watch for leak at the keel as well it's in the same area. The sealant was a dry product back then , it is a forever flexible now. Hopefully you get it sealed up. Cheers 🍻

Out the side can put a little bit of torque on the gunnel and a few little adjustments need to be made while using, but does put the motor beside the user as opposed to behind them. Transom mount steering is same as a regular boat
