Chiming in after 3 years. The R-27/30 came in as Olive Drab - the IRT R21/22 was similar but I can't say they were identical. The R-17 came in a type of Maroon (reddish purple). The R-28,29,33 came in with Cherry Red (also used on a few R-10s). The white was the color that was done as an anti-graffitti statement. Some R-16 and R-27/30 cars got white, but no R-10s. Totally impractical and blinding on cloudless days it truly was a shock to see the first couple of times you saw it. Initially they were kept in solid trains. In order to declare the entire system graffiti free inside and out by May 1987 many cars about to be retired by the incoming R-62A and R68/68A fleets were repainted in green and Tuscan Red. During the transition to graffittie free, repainted and protected cars were run in solid trains. GO is not a word, it is an abbreviation for General Overhaul. Also the air-conditioning retrofit of the R-33/36 fleet began about 3 years before the first G.O. cars appeared (which was on the 7 and done in house to a lesser standard than the greater number sent out to contractors). The pilot IRT air conditioning retrofit train was done in 1975 and kept graffiti free long after the rest of the fleet was thoroughly vandalized (but not all the way to adoption of 1981 white). That train was used for special occasions, like when the Mayor, Pope or UMTA administrator needed to do a publicity ride.

Why can't IRT Lexington Avenue service be brought back - this time using the outer loop? At the same time, the southern terminus of the 5 can be Brooklyn Bridge - not Bowling Green.

March 24, 2020, was actually the R32s’ death. But, from July 1, 2020 until October 8, 2020, they were used as a “reserved fleet” and re-entered service on the A, C and J, Z lines because of the R179s being pulled from service due to the second and third cars on a in-service ten-car uptown R179 A train coming unhitched and separating from each other just outside the Chambers Street Station in lower Manhattan shortly after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, forcing the MTA to evacuate 10 passengers from a tunnel. This was to fill in the gap for the R179s. On September 15, 2020, R179s returned to service after safety checks by MTA personnel were completed and the head of the MTA gave the green light and said it was safe to return the fleet to passenger service and R.I.P R32s September 14, 1964 - October 8, 2020, thanks for 56 years of service. Finally, from December 19, 2021 to January 9, 2022, a series of farewell trips occurred with the final set of R32s in passenger service, on the Q line, their original debuting line on September 14, 1964, making express stops, ending a almost 58-year career with the Metropolitan Authority Authority.

I rode these all in service; the LoV's all over the IRT, the Arnines on the IND, the AB Standards on the BMT, then R-16/17's, R27's and 32's, all memories now. For those of us who rode these cars as kids, this is a grim _memento mori_ . (The graffiti era was exceptionally painful.)

You forgot to mention that this station was well-known for customers waiting in stairwells when the lower level was active, since both local and express Manhattan-bound trains merged north of the station, thus stopping at the same stations beyond.

It would have been nice if the MTA preserved a good hand full of R10s to be use for special occasions like the Holiday Train.
