Love this, another great video, Dave! Stress IS the main thing I want to get rid of in retirement, never thought of stress as good for the mind, body and spirit😊

I totally related to this. I retired at 55, after being laid off, to help my husband care for his parents. I started a blog and my YT channel to keep my brain ticking andd started taking better care of my health to keep my heart ticking. I will challenge myself to get in more physical activity.

This is similar to what I did: Walk and/or run/job the number of miles in the year. Started by doing 2020 miles in 2020. I'm in the middle of 2024 miles in 2024. It comes to about 5.5 miles a day, or about 11,000 steps. Now it's just part of my life as I add other goals, but it keeps me in shape, and I can enjoy music, the youtube, or scenery/nature while walking. Your 30 minutes a day for 30 days idea is an interesting challenge. Going to figure it out and implement it.

I came across your channel through this video-case studies are incredibly valuable, and I'm eager to see more in the future! Building wealth involves establishing routines, like consistently setting aside funds at regular intervals for smart investments.

The great philosopher Andrew Dufrane said " get busy living or get busy dieing". You can choose to sit around, take it easy or choose to live life! What's a life without purpose? I make middle class income, I like my job and the people I work with. I plan on leaving feet first. If I lose this job I'm going to find something that gives me purpose!

Thank you, Dave so true…. My dad and mom worked so hard to support seven brothers and sisters and myself.. They both retired 1984. They aged more in 1 year, mostly because they didn’t have any plans. Thank God they realized this and became very active in the community and church. They also started having grandchildren 👶🏽 visit them! Both lived wonderful lives into their 90’s. Semper Fi!🇺🇸❤️

Work, although essential, can absorb all of your energy, your life force. Not working is also a challenge with the need to build meaningful activities. Focusing on relationships both family and friends, good nutrition, daily exercise, and prayer will do wonders.

What about the idea of minimizing sequence of return risks? In other words, if you take SS earlier than 70 and its a base for covering your expenses and there is a tough few years in the market you could make the decision to cut expenses and pull less from your investments during a down time. Anyway, there is no easy answer because we can’t know all the variable. How long will we live? How will the market do? What changes will be made to SS? Etc. Anyway, helpful video.

I’ve been retired 5 years. It was a tough transition because I put so much of my life and energy into my job. I eased away from work by doing volunteer hours associated to my career path, but at a much more reduced scale. I also rediscovered a passion from my ten age years (photography ). Now I’m finding myself wanting to spend more time on photography than doing volunteer work! I feel like I’m weaning off of the work environment. That worked for me.

The worst thing you can do is to give up work, I see men, in particular, going from 100% to zero: they lose their purpose, status, social interactions and their ‘brains go to mush’…..I’ve been part-time teaching 3 days per week since 55 and love the life work balance, work ‘kicks me up the ass’ and forces me to ‘switch on’!

Very good content and well presented -- thank you. The only thing I can't agree with is the chart at the end, and I came across this when I did the GAB (Guided Autobiography)(for older adults) a while ago. We don't usually have higher quality of life in our later years because we tend to have one health issue after another, and these can GREATLY affect whatever peace and joy we've managed to muster by the end years. I enjoyed my childhood and teen years the most -- when you are not quite conscious of everything that is going on in the world and have no real responsibilities except do well in school, THAT's the life. When you're old and struggling to get up the stairs, that sucks. I suppose the wealthier people who can pay for all the specialized health care in their old age do fit into that graph, but the rest of us deal with varying degrees of physical suffering and mental decline.

I think work can be really good for some people, but I think it needs to be appropriate. I worked from 21 to 51 in a high stress job. Then 51 to 67 in a school as an assistant, then 68 to 70 as a part time lab technician. I was financially secure at 51 but enjoyed the interraction with the people and the pleasure from doing a good job. I guess at 71 I'm retired now (probably) but I don't regret it at all.

Unless you’ve got a really different job (I.e. super interesting & anything but normal) and money aside…if you’ve got the means to retire and don’t….you’ve got life wrong. Go get an interest cause guaranteed you’ll be missed at work for 1 day.

I keep waffling over this. I am tired of working and my brain has slowed down. The field I work in is advancing so fast and it's tough to keep up. I could switch to a job that is just static because there are some out there, but I am tired!! I do not have a big retirement account, so your 'retired' person example does not apply to me. There are thousands and thousands of people in our country in the same situation. What are our options? Nobody seems to care. If you make a lot of money thru retirement funds or savings, what is the point in taking SS? SS is a social program whether you like the term or not. My hope is that eventually it will be ONLY for the people that cannot afford to live otherwise. Someone with 5million in the bank/retirement does not NEED SS and I find it offensive that they are so greedy that they want to take more. Yes I have worked 40 years, yes I have paid into it 40 years. And I have learned that it's basically a tax, nothing more. If it were a true retirement investment, the account would have my name on it and would show how much it's grown... just like a 401k or other investment vehicle.

This is right on the money and so validating. I've always felt that I've ended up here by anguish and accident. The thoughtful presention of all this info is fantastic, and it's nice to see the comments/anecdotes from all you folks. I wish there was a better community to connect. Here in Silicon Valley, the environment has me always questioning my sanity because everyone here lives to work. I did for my entire life until recently. I agree with other folks is that one thing that could be mentioned is finding a low key job that brings you satisfaction and isn't too demanding. It's a great way to control the burn rate and keep sharp.

What I find interesting is on the over/under-valued chart, while U.S. equities are labeled as extremely over-valued, every other category of U.S. equity (i.e., Growth, Large cap, Value, and Small-cap) as well below that on the scale. How can that be? I know there are other categories; however, the categories listed would comprise the vast majority of U.S. equity markets, right?

Everyone’s situation is different. I have a pension paying about 40% and that and wife still wanting to work and so taking SS allowed me to retire early. It also allowed me ‘not’ to have to draw on my 401K for four years. This allowed the 401K to more than double in the nine years since retirement. I also took out a $500K life insurance policy when I was 55 as an additional safety net for my wife.

I’m 63, retired and husband is older and already drawing. I feel like I want to take SS now or at 64 because I am so afraid to spend down my retirement accounts. But I feel like I’d be leaving money on the table by accepting a lower benefit, especially since I figure my life expectancy is 85+. I go back and forth…

Great comments. I was made redundant when I was 63, had been planning for another few years to build up the nest egg, but just thought “ there is no joy in that for me” and lots of stress in finding a job. So did a financial plan, looks pretty good with a few adjustments to spending ( reduced material acquisitions, more experiences) feel much more settled.
