In example 1, if you look at 1 and 3 on the vernier scale, are spaced a small bit away from the lines on the main scale. Easier to see and confirm the 0.2 mm. Actually you can see that the example picture is some microns less than 31.2 mm by looking at the surrounding lines.. Though a decent calipers precision is 0.1 mm.
