My dad, Don unger was a lifelong charlie waller fan. He knew bout every song by heart. I once said if i ever sold dad's old guitar it would go to charlie waller. Dad's right beside charlie now, in heaven's bluegrass band. ❤❤

Fantastic to see Smokey Greene live! I met him on his Bluegrass Festival in Corinth NY in the Summer of 1974. After his show I talked with him and wanted to buy his LP. Unfortunately he wouldn´t sell it to me, as I came from the Netherlands and he said that his LP would not be good enough for me to take to Europe.... Still looking for one of his LPs... About 30 years later, my son Ralph played with Banjo player Ron Rigsby and his band Blue Diamond during his Summer holiday and he met Smokey Greene. When he came back, he brought me a signed set of guitar strings! Not long before his death, Smokey sent me a CD ROM with some Charlie Moore recordings, made in his venue as well as a radio show he had presented. I will always remember him and love his simple, real and straightforward Country pickin´and sigin´. Best wishes to his son and family, from the mountains of Austria!

I got to see and talk to most all the top bluegrass bands in the 70's - 80's . The Country Gentlemen in my opinion was the very best.

@@fergusonto-2032 John Duffy passed on Dec 10, 1996. The bluegrass band The Country Gentleman was a band that originally formed in Washington, DC. I remember when I was a just a kid. My dad took my brother and I to the small town of Fincastle, Va a few miles north of Roanoke, Va to a Bluegrass Festival on a farm called Cantrell’s Farm. It was Labor Day, 1965 and the festival was the first of its kind to be held in the country. I remember going up on their bus for a jam session. My dad was asked to play with them on their bus before going on stage and the music should have been recorded for an album. Dad played a Martin D-28 guitar and his voice was like Lester Flatt. Flatt and Scruggs. Ralph and Carter Stanley. Don Reno and Red Smiley. The Carter Family and many more. Look here on KZfaq for a Bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Va. in 1965, 1966, and 1967. It will bring you to the festival that was held there. It was the beginning of many bluegrass bands creating their own festivals. I remember being there so very long ago. The music was better than anything being recorded or played now.

@@fergusonto-2032 No, John Duffy passed away Dec.11, 1996. Nearly 18 years ago. I have a lot of there vinyl LP’s on Rebel records. I was always partial to Eddie Adcock on 5- string. First meet the original group in Fincastle, Va. Labor Day weekend in 1965 at a bluegrass festival at a place called Cantrell’s farm. YT has the event. Look up bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Va in 1965, 66, 67. Every bluegrass musician that was there my dad knew. Some of the best music played was on their buses before going on stage.

@@slowpoke7759 that’s awesome , I had an Uncle , Leroy Canter , who was an awesome fiddle player , he used to go to a lot of fiddlers conventions in his younger days , he rarely came home w/ less than a blue ribbon , he got saved in the early 70’s and I don’t think he played any conventions after that , he just played locally , in church & occasionally at my house but anyway thanks for the info. Mr Duffy was one of my favorites .

I met Ralph Stanley and his band in 1980 at the Waterloo Village bluegrass festival in North Jersey .... what a great bunch of guys .... after their stage show they came out into the crowd to jam with the folks ... I couldn''t believe it ... Ralph Stanley , Curly Ray , and Mac Weissman came over to our picnic table and jammed with us ! Curly Ray was a'jumpin and hopping while playing that fiddle , big smile and clearly enjoying playing with the crowd .... thats just how he was ,even when not onstage ... they clearly understood what bluegrass was about , including the tradition of jamming with folks.

@11:20 the old fella, I’m sure he’s passed gone now, but I’m not sure how to feel about this parody. Is the song Mocking Our Lord? Is it all “ Just a Bowl of Butterbeans” to him? Or is it Truly “ Just Another Walk With Thee”? I can see the old man’s face in tears as he ended the song. This Hymn Twisting can’t be a Good thing.
