I worked in that building from 2001 until we moved out in 2008. The building was supposed to be converted to luxury apartments but the owner was never able to finish the project because of the financial and housing crash. I worked in Security so if you ever want to know more about the building I would be happy to tell you all about it. Security knows all the weird little nooks and secret little areas. There were huge water tanks in the area above the gym. They were used as fire suppression back when the building was first built in the early 1900's.

Highland park is literally a step away from Detroit, and a lot of these places- like Grosse Pointe USED to be Detroit before they changed the name and separated parts of the city. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Highland Park was Detroit at one point. It’s all the same to me. And yes, I live in Detroit.

Wow! I lived in Topeka from 1960-1967. I had many, many good times in this mall. Was really sad to hear it is no longer there. Later, on a drivng trip my brother and I saw TOP GUN movie in 1986 or 1987. My last time there.

MLK school was not that old. I don’t remember exactly when it was opened…I am guessing sometime in the 70s. That is why it looks more modern.

In the basement there was a room with the door welded shut. They knocked out the bricks around the upper section of the door. So I took a peek of what they hid behind the door. There was 1970's CRT monitors stacked in a curve around the back wall, on the floor was two skeletons. They still had there uniforms and shoes on. They were lying face down. These dudes were likely in there office when the flash flood hit the facility on September 12, 1977. Water poured in so quickly there was no chance to escape, especially when the lights went out. By what I saw, that is my assessment of what happened. So management shut the door and welded it closed. I wanna know what happened to those bones, who were they? Its a mystery that bugs me nonstop till this very day.

A lot of KCSD schools have in the past few decades either closed or transferred to neighboring school districts. About half of the school buildings in the Raytown district are actually in Kansas City, not Raytown, and a few years back Van Horn High School transferred from KC to Independence.

PLEASE PIN THIS!, the mall has now been demolished and the city still does not know what to turn it in, rumours have said that they will be turning it into a apartment complex or if they can not afford to do that, they will leave the parking lot sitting their to rot, and well time will only tell, (also they just finished demolishing it last week!)

Whos they? The staff did more to poison that place then the mold did the rest. I got over there for the 1997-1998 school year from the north side. The rotc staff inc. MSGT ROE, CWO Taylor, & assistant principal Calvin Starks (uncle tom sellout) were all in on treating us like crap. It wasn't our fault another SLPS staff took the "magnet school selection" application briefcase onto a casino property & LOST it for several days. SO we just got dumped over there instead of where our families attended school for generations. That didn't get out tho. Just lots of yelling & detention for dumb stuff. Personal belongings like $80 calculators were stolen & it was a trusted upper class-man left in the room. School did nothing. Probably 8-10 kids in the class were ripped off & the ROTC commander Mr. FERRARI WARE did nothing! The other SLPS teachers were powerless to stop the abusers. Nobody spoke up for the kids from the northside! So when I come back & roll past I'm like whatever, its too bad they lost the building but I didn't loose anything but half my sanity attending there. ❤‍🩹 Not going to even comment on what they done to the transcripts of the kids they DISMISSED for behavioral problems!

I attended the school around 2011-13. I’ve always wanted to explore it, but could never find a way in. I believe the building rotting took a big part in its closure since it had become a real safety hazard. Weeks was already closed and condemned when I went to school there.

Tis facts! they are struggling to take them down because they cant just demo it like any other building. They actually spent $1.2 million, to deconstruct 4 of the silos in the 70's or 80's to make way for I-80. This is why they have sat abandoned for so many years. Someone bought the property in the spring for $700k and has been just sitting on it since. the asbetos and lead would go into about a 3 block radius for up to 21 days if they were to just knock it down or blow it up. They have to slowly take it apart from the top, down.
