1:29:38 wait every? all the people who put hands on the game are artists? programmers, voice actors, and QA are all artists? is a person who writes code for some non-art software not an artist, but a person who writes code for a piece of art like a game is, even though they're doing the same thing? /genq

“Half-joking”, at least to me and in my experience, simply means “the sentiment behind this statement is earnest, though I am expressing it in a deliberately absurd or obtuse way.” It just takes a little parsing and additional context above and beyond sarcasm.

The only interpretation I can come up with for the SPECIFIC case "I am going to buy an absurd amount of orange juice /hj" redefines absurd as not just funny, but as so unusual or out of place that it is funny. In this hypothetical scenario, the speaker of this sentence is going to buy an amount of orange juice that is more than what they usually buy(for example, two cartons instead of one). Therefore it is unusual, and the person is only referring to the amount of orange juice they are buying as absurd because it is funny to them to exaggerate their opinion of how unusual buying two cartons instead of one is. Two cartons of orange juice is now not only unusual, but SO unusual(in the context of the case sentence) that it crosses into absurd territory. Looking at it in a binary sense, where the speaker is either completely joking or completely not joking, /j would imply that the speaker either is not buying orange juice or is buying an amount of orange juice they do not consider to be absurd at all. I think in this case, two cartons of orange juice being just slightly absurd(just unusual) breaks both of the previous /j conditions. However, it would be strange to call it absurd genuinely because the speaker does not consider it properly absurd, which is why /g doesn't apply. Therefore "I am going to buy an absurd amount of orange juice /hj" is half-joking in that there is some seriousness in it(the speaker considers the amount of orange juice unusual, which is a low degree of absurd on the scale of absurdity) but it is also joking(the amount of orange juice they are buying does not qualify as properly absurd, so exaggerating its absurdity is funny to them). You could say that it is just joking because the actual situation and spoken description do not line up, and I feel that /j does communicate most of this idea better, but if all the premises established above are true and known or intuited by both the speaker and interpreter of this sentence, /hj does technically communicate the full intent and contents of the message more clearly. Tangent time: the idea of "properly absurd" implies a sliding scale to the intensity of an adjective, where "properly absurd" is a certain degree of absurd completely dependent on what the speaker thinks is a good amount. And in the context of this sentence, there is a range in that scale where the intensity of said adjective is high enough to be noticeable, not high enough to be acceptable to use genuinely in reference to an object, but high enough to where exaggerating the adjective's intensity to the point of being genuine can be a joke in and of itself. I do think the idea of words functioning by degrees of intensity rather than adhering to binary true/false is interesting, and possibly a more accurate way to represent intent. However, it is also Way Harder To Apply, especially in real time. All in all, /hj to me is an embodiment of the problem of neurodivergent people being expected to correctly apply ideas with flexible, multiple and/or unknown definitions to different situations on a case-by case basis using the intuition of a neurotypical person. Which is ironic, because /hj is part of a group of accessibility tools which are supposed to mitigate that problem. Anyway what the hell does /j /g mean. Like what the fuck

I feel like I get what the goal is with the Dora the Explorer example. Like, when I say "Dora the explorer teaches you the alphabet", I'm not actually implying that you specifically watch Dora and are taught the alphabet by it. Feels kind of like "one" as a pronoun, but idk, I am very much not a linguist

Honestly half-joking I've always interpreted as both definition 1 and definition 2 simultaneously since communication isn't always boolean, right, so there's places where for instance "i want to unalive myself" could be half-joking in that one is both depressed and does ideate self-deletion but has no active intent to do so and intends to laugh at the statement -- as in, both take it as a joke and take it seriously and understand that there is truth to it but please don't assume the intent of the statement was to earnestly communicate the meaning the words would imply. I'd also argue that in a lot of cases the concept of "there is no tonal way to communicate this" isn't exactly true; there's some amount of nonverbal components and context which would imply that a particular statement was intended to invoke this kind of cognitive dissonance. This might qualify as something like the tone for meta-irony or meta-meta-irony

Interlingua is very naturalistic and that's why it has some irregularity. Is that bad? It depends on the goals of the language. The goals of interlingua is to be easily understood by Westeners and to feel natural. It precisely uses only international vocabulary from Western languages, and mimics Romance and English grammar for being recognizable. And for that, I think it pretty much reaches its goals. If you as a Westener can read a text in interlingua without ever having to learn it, there it is. You can't do it with Esperanto, because even though both are IALs they have different goals.

This sounds like you have a problem understanding what half joking is to begin with, which isn't a problem with the tone indicator at all but with the inherent concept itself. Kinda silly to get mad at the way people are communicating that something is a half joke when your actual problem is with half joking entirely.

Personally, I think this video is definitely part of the Mainline 'How Many Super Mario Games Are There" series, but it doesn't count as a distinct entry. It's more of a remake compilation of the previous entries.
