As a fan of a team, the Los Angeles Rams, that is increasingly using Duo I appreciate you explaining it. I am a medium knowledgeable fan but not big on the x's and o's. I appreciate your video but suggest maybe you try to be aware of using a lot of lingo that a standard fan like me might not understand.

@@americanfootballacademy1741 over or under is a front when there is a TE. A four men front without a TE is referred to as boundary or wide/field, depending on where you place the 3Tech. But again I guess everyone was taught differently or uses different terminology but the over and under requiring a TE is pretty standard, I would say. The rest is very solid / good football Xs and Os.

Coach, awesome video! thank you! I have 1 question that I'm hoping you can answer for me. When helping backside (center helping with a 2i or 1), what is the rule if the play side 3 tech slants A gap? Does that play side guard have to stay man on him? Obviously not letting him cross his face is ideal but it's a question I've always had. Thanks again coach!
@americanfootballacademy1741Ай бұрын
I've always handled it by having the PSG be responsible for that. First step would be with the inside foot rather than the playside foot to help prevent that exact issue. RBs should also be aware of this as well so they can anticipate. And if you face a team that regularly slants **and it's giving you problems** then you can consider just adding a tag to help playside on occasion or switch your "base rule" for that game to help playside.

Yeah, good scheme stuff. To me, the difference with O-Linemen when running OZ vs. IZ is always technique. Aiming points are the difference and everyone will have different ideas on feet, hands and eyes when teaching technique. Personally, I really don’t like teaching seal blocking on zone stuff. I’d rather have them keeping square to the LOS OR butts aimed backside (pushing to the playside sideline). Changing direction from backside to playside is rarely effective, but extending to the next defender playside when you have backside help is way easier, and is where your eyes should be anyway. No doubt, having a line call where they gap-scheme the heads-up pair rather than zone-playside (following C/U rules) can be effective when needed. For HS kids, you just have to budget for the time to teach that and then TRUST them to make the right call at the LOS.
@americanfootballacademy17412 ай бұрын
Yeah, I actually just watched a video the other day about this when it comes to keeping them squared up. I've taught them to focus on getting hips around when we're trying to get outside and I've had a lot of success with it but definitely something I need to dive much more into.

Thank you for nice Break Down Coach.I have a question. sometimes on film study Uncovered OL takeover Covered line man's DL and Covered line man goes to second level. how could I decide it? is it pre snap read? or depending on what front is?
@americanfootballacademy17413 ай бұрын
You might be able to get a Pre-snap idea based on the front and if you know the tendencies of the DL but that's always a post snap decision. That's the joy of zone... Allows for solutions to anything because by nature it's about reacting. Also, best to try and understand the goal of the play. Outside zone for example, the #1 goal is getting outside. So OL will adapt technique to allow for that. Something like wide zone will be different. This is why you should always start with the end in mind. Will allow you to just ask the right questions and get to the outcome.

can any two offensive linemen execute a pin and pull or is it always the playside guard and center?
@americanfootballacademy17413 ай бұрын
Depends on who is teaching and their philosophy. For me, I look at it as who has the best angles and is able to get the job done, so yeah, whatever makes the most sense for that opponent/front
@david935plum3 ай бұрын
Good video. HS o-line coach here - we teach Covered/Uncovered in our zone game. I really like your definition of ‘covered’, mine has probably been too heavily weighted to the backside defenders and too often we get guys not working playside, and being too heavy on their backside look. I always say, defenses are gap sound, if there is nobody in your gap as the snap, somebody will show up.
@americanfootballacademy17413 ай бұрын
Yeah, my rules for this have adapted many times in the past haha and will likely change again moving forward as I find better ways to teach it. Had the same problem with the "not looking playside" before. Not many things more frustrating than a 1st level defender being completely unblocked 😅😂
@COACHDJKELLZ3 ай бұрын
Gap scheme is simple and I am old school so the rule for me is gap down backer if there is no one in your gap, you will go to the backer. For me, I would kick out the DE because he is the first gap outside the TE. Wing-T rules but simple to understand. The conflict player will be the corner because we want to run underneath the the kick out defender. The 9tech would be my mark for the kick out. Depending on your front Buck-sweep would be the adjustment for Pin and Pull. That is my rules for it. Great play!
@mr.j34374 ай бұрын
Why is Duo always run out of these heavy formations? It seems like if you spread them out wide and use a sniffer, you should be able to run it into a lighter box. This would also let you read an end and RPO a jail screen to the back side. Am I missing something?
@americanfootballacademy17414 ай бұрын
I normally run it out of 11 personnel. 3 wrs, allows you to pair it with quick game or a single wr glance. I don't remember if I talked about that in the video. Generally teams use it from this heavy look because in short yardage, it's a great play. Allows for good angles and forces corners to tackle. With the OL knowing the leverage they want and the read being 2nd level, makes it a great play for 1-2 yards. But for sure, the majority of the time I use it is from a 3 wr set. You do need the fullback or TE in there though. Can't run it without unless you option the C gap defender.

The Uncovered Center needs to get hands on the "N" in a double with the" RG" then go second level to the "M" in your first OZ play example.
@americanfootballacademy17412 ай бұрын
I think it depends on how you wanna teach it. I've seen it taught in so many different ways. I prefer him leaving that and getting eyes playside and then working up to that mike. Always had issues with the Mike flowing over the top if the Center helps on the backside first. And a quick 3 tech slanting inside can kill the play if the PSG has no help. So for me this variation has been a good fix. Most times we hit outside so the backside 1 tech isn't a problem. Would be different rules if running wide zone or inside zone where that cutback becomes more of a focus.

What do you teach the quarterback for his dropback? Do you teach it as a one-step quick game, 3-step timing, or something else?
@americanfootballacademy17416 ай бұрын
I let them adjust it based on what they think it can be. The 2 options I give are a quick 3 step (not working for any depth, but 3 quick steps). This differs from the 1 big, 2 little mindset. It's 3 very quick steps that put them in the position to get it out very quick. Or they use essentially a 1 step. Brady used it a ton for his quick/intermediate game. Times up well with the stick but also allows you to get a yard of depth in case you need to get to the dig.

Could you elaborate on what you mean? I think in general the same benefits that motions give you apply to any defense, including a 3-3-5. You can quickly change the strength, overload a side, add numbers to the box, change leverage. If I had to pick something I think in particular I'd use... I'd see how they adjust when adding numbers to the box with a quick motion and build a package off that. Could be an interesting way to run split zone or power and have everyone picked up from a spread look. Hopefully that helps a bit, but let me know if I was on the right track with this
