He made 3 good films . Dogs , Pulp , and Brown . Shlock since then . Overly verbose and devoid of Witt.

Having just watched the film for the first time, I would say the first portion focuses on Justine's depression, the second on Clare's anxiety.

I think big block buster movies really just want to surpass the daily struggles that humans go through, just so that we can actually enjoy what these movies really are meant for *f u n*

Avatar exemplifies the best we can do utililizing this principle so far. The current trade mark for this is Real D released back in the 80s as Spacevision. In the Movie gnarly alien parasites were supposed to drop from the roof of an abandoned shack and straight out of the cinema screen and I must say it worked. The colour quality seemed even enabled by the process. Here however is the rub. Vergence accommodation conflict. Lose concentration for even a short period and the illusion becomes prone misconvergent fringing even if you so so much as shift position in your seat. This is the result of a two stage filter polarising stage that starts in the cine projector. Some might argue this spells doom for Real D from the getgo, and also letterbox aspect ratio anamorphic lenses already have a reputation out there for being dynamic and immersive. 3D needs work!

In France you can directly finance French cinema with the SOFICA. You can invest up to 18,000 euros a year in one of the dozen or so approved programs and get 48% of it back as a tax reduction. In 10 years, you get the initial amount back plus any gains. It's not a guarantee (like FDIC) so there's some risk to it. Its main draw is that you can reduce your taxes up front and use that money to make your own investments while at the same time funneling money to cause that's important to you

Interesting to see all the frenchmen in chat bashing this system, like friends, have you looked at what US cinema is currently producing and how impossible it is for people to consistently make interesting films in the US outside a few big names (let alone how dire the state of US Cinemas are?)

Would have been really cool if Miracleman got a live adaption series.... But seeing as it's currently owned by Marvel I dunno. It honestly would fit better if it took place in a separate universe than the MCU.

Honestly the most alien feeling thing about the show is how the characters and dialogue feel like they were written by an AI. That's not a compliment.

Cinema in France is heavily subsidized by French taxes. it funds a lot of very mediocre art projects that no one watches. they are rewarded with the right to remake mediocre films that no one watches again. it's communism. talent is not a criterion. we are very proud of this system.

I would have been nice if the had gone the extra mile and have actual portuguese coming out of the portuguese characters at times. But i understand it is not the focus of the stranded englishman' story we are following along the way. Very interesting video as expected.

"Misogynistic image of virginal purity" what a load of nonsense, there is nothing misogynistic about valuing virginal purity and how on earth would that equal sexless loveless marriage. Virginal purity is up til marriage. Decent interpretation but still flawed in putting a specific agenda into the words which by themselves do not necessarily imply that whatsoever.

We don't need more Hollywood cliches such as unknown person is revealed to be a villain. The format of passengers is already done masterfully. Lawrence Fishborne's line about his choice was perfectly placed.

How French cinema works? For each scene, they place a camera in front of the actors who play roles and they shoot the scene.

It is great to read this comment section 7 years later given how Brexit turned out. There was no bias. Sacrifice free markets and cheap labour for a more restrictive immigration policy? Great decision, UK!😂 This is the same country that declared war against China because free markets are an ideal worth fighting for. Bunch of clowns.

Frans Hals also deserves to be in the conversation. Contemporary of Velazquez and his strokes can be clearly seen on canvas, also catching people in the moment, not rarely 'unflattering'. Excellent content though and I was criminally unaware of Sargent. Good explanation how the 2d technique based on colour differences / tonality is fundamentally different from the more architecturial, desegno methods using lines of perspective. Thank you and I'll keep following your content.

“Break, break, break” to me feels like pleading for the grief to break. But grief, like the sea, is so powerful, all consuming and inescapable. He’s standing on a cliff, at the mercy of its vastness and power, just begging for it to break.

You gotta be a real peace of work to be salty about your child being more successful than you. I feel like that’s a big reason to have kids, you want them to have a better life than you, that means you were a successful parent, you elevated your lineage.
