I would recommend Baihe novels, my personal favs are Ruzhui, Female General and Eldest Princess, Clear and Muddy loss of love. All 3 of these are written by PDL (lesbian author who is dating a woman). Currently I'm reading Miss Forensics which is quite intriguing for now atleast... As the lack butch/Masc characters i agree with you on that but like i haven't finished half of your video but i do have complaints about wlw romance!!

I feel like some ppl see the label "lesbian" as like inherently sexual & are often the ppl also focused on stripping lesbian sexual desire away & making everything "wholesome." Like gd forbid we as women express overt lust or sexual desire for another woman 🙄🙄

I know this video is like, 5 months old but you didn't say it in the video and I'm kinda surprised I didn't see it in the comments: WHERE IS THE BUTCH FOR BUTCH CONTENT Like, yes sure the butch/femme dynamic is cute, but as a butch I've only ever had one partner who came close to femme-femme, everyone else I've dated and most of their partners have also been butch and/or some kind of gnc. Also here for the lesbian grindr, has anyone gotten to work on that?

But I do find there's hardly any epic lesbian romances where the conflict is something that they are fighting in the world that isn't related to their relationship, like, an epic fantasy where they are fighting the forces of evil and just happen to fall in love...

I think you should give Baihe novels a try ! i can only recommend the ones I've read so Ruzhui (Matrilocal Marriage) this is Modern Lesbian x Rich Business woman in ancient time, Genre is Time travel but we get a lot of different genres mixed in this also Sci-Fi at the end and its really amazing! There are 2 more novels written by the same author of this novel you can check it out !

I feel like, in contrast to the femme-for-femme romance books, queer women in movies have either been represented as 'accidental gay- no actually I'm straight'/two straight women cheating on their male partners with each other or a straight feminine woman dating a butch woman. For example the TV show "I kissed a Girl" had one femme-for-femme lesbian and everyone else was paired off femme/masc.

This is so true I’ve fallen in love with a lot of FF books that center WOC. They are so much better at real lesbian romances with everything I get from other romance books. Like Kris and D’Vaughn plan a wedding

I totally agree with you! I feel like a lot of authors who write like this do so because they're afraid to stepping into waters that might deem them "problematic" or "fetishistic" but they don't realize that is easily remedied by having writing that is actually good and lived experience.

I'm not gay, but my daughter is. I've read some very sweet BL stories (and one Alpha stories, which will never happen again), but I haven't read any GL. I think that most CIS women who read BL are probably in committed relationships. CIS Women that read GL are probably single and curious. That's why the authors write characters that these women can see themselves in, the type person that says that they'd be gay for Angelina Jole. They want to look like the characters, not have sex with them, like lesbian readers would. It's the opposite for me, reading BL. Just be patient. Right now, I think that it's good that young women have a safe way to explore their sexuality. Maybe a BL author will write a GL side story about their characters' lesbian friends who helped them get together 😉 I started to read one that had a great best friend couple, but I stopped reading it because I didn't like the way the main male character was acting towards his love intrerest. You can hang out with the person that you like, but trying to force a relationship to be something that it's not and the other person isn't ready for is not cool.

i am also femme for butch/masc and i hate how hard it is to find a story with that actual dynamic 😭literally so desperate for that kind of romance in any way cos the ones ive read kind of fall short. i am also like not attracted to femme women at all so its hard to read a story where both mcs are super femme, and ones that do have a butch (one last stop, when katie met cassidy) are badly written and have a weird relationship. and also i want ONE book where both mcs are lesbians. i do not want to hear about a man EVER. help i am starving here

Have you read any of Sarah Waters' books? They're amazing. More literary fiction/historical fiction, but nearly all centered on FF relationships and some absolute fire steamy scenes. Tipping the velvet is a great one to start with. And The Night Watch has several strong butch characters.

ooh yeah it actually does suck it's so boring i couldn't get past two pages of this lesbian novel i bought. even lesbian fanfiction is bland and lacks excitement and character and drama and toxicity and there's literally nothing interesting there. all i ever read is dark fucked up gay fanfiction or just straight people books that are btw more queer that the lesbian ones. please someone save me. like where's lesbian version on saltburn and talented mr ripley? where are lesbians who are willing to lie deceive do unspeakable horrible things in the name of love obsession and desire? where are lesbian villains? why are straight characters giving off more lesbian vibes than actual lesbians?

I'm Brazilian, and here we call books in which the relationship is between women or some non-binary people "sapphic books". And when the relationship is between two lesbians, we call it a lesbian book. Sapphic books can be relationships with bi+pan, bi+bi, bi+lesbian or even lesbian plus lesbian. But we only call it a lesbian relationship when both are lesbians, so as not to have this problem. 5:26

Really interesting video! However, I think you need to separate wlw romance from lesbian romance, especially in the context of criticizing lesbian romance books, because a lot of the books you find fault with are marketed as queer romance, not lesbian romance. If you are starting a book with the expectation that two female characters are going to date, then yes, you might get upset if your expectations of lesbian x lesbian aren't fulfilled, but invalidating the experienced of wlw people, especially bisexuals because they're not "true gays" just feels a bit icky to me :/ Otherwise, really cool stuff!

Yes, thank you! I'm glad to know that it's not just me, a butch, with the feeling of "Where's the beef?" meaning, "Where're the lesbians?" I also don't have time for poorly written books. Toni Morrison said she had to start writing the books she wanted to read. I hope you're working on one -- sounds like I'd read it.

They suck because romances, in general, tend to suck. These are fluff books written in four months to sell for very cheap to people who do not want to put thought or effort into their reading material. Straight versions and gay male versions of these books suck every bit as much as these do. The solution is simply to read better books. Jeanette Winterson has been publishing for decades, lol.

I love f/f romance in all its forms, but there's a specific type I steer clear of: stories that masquerade as romance but are actually something else entirely. Far too many modern lesbian narratives focus on trauma, therapy sessions, and the struggles of being queer. It's like they forget that love and joy can exist alongside those experiences. I'm currently writing a fanfiction continuation of the Japanese drama "Chaser Game W," and I intentionally shifted the focus to a healthy lesbian relationship between two characters who grew up in loving, accepting families, one of them (eventually) being the original bisexual couple from the series. I wanted to explore a romance where the main conflict isn't rooted in internalized homophobia or societal rejection. We need more stories about lesbians who are thriving, not just surviving. Stories that celebrate love, connection, and the full spectrum of human experience within the context of a queer relationship.

It's interesting to see a western ff book comment like that, I mostly read Chinese ff novels but I have heard that western lesbian novels are always related with men exs LOL. Your video gave me a more comprehensive understanding. Some Chinese yuri novels(mostly webnovels) have same problem but I think it's acceptable cause we have a large amout of other novels with pure lesbian & lesian to consume, and bi & lesbian couples in real life are also kinda common in China cause we can not be as 'proud' publicly. Seeing this contrast of reality and literature in western is even more strange tbh... it's a pity that most Chinese yuri novels are not been able to consumed by western ppl due to the lack of translators, we have a lot of various types of stories...
