I memorized this song right after graduating high school, and its been years since I listened to it. But i still know every word, even as I sit here holding ice packs to my side from a bad twist. Im more bitter than before and this song helps.

Set the seane you are drunk be hind the bar hafe stump on a garbage can with a bottle in hand. Singing this loudly to your self. Trying to forget your wife left you four best friend and your kids hate you you lost you job and car. And let's say your on one of the cost and it starts to rain so you pick yourself up and stumble away into the darkness with tears in your eyes

Everybody always talks about the chaos and melancholy that tone of this song (and it's prequel) give off, but my take is quite different: The first song is all about spiritual anguish. The singer talks about how they are a fool from Catholic school, and hints that they have a bad "relationship" of the saints of Catholicism. They call themselves Satanic and chained up. Being chained up is important to the narrative of the song, because in Christianity it is the truth, God, that sets you free; even if you are in chains and enslaved, you are still free because you have God and you will inherit the kingdom of Heaven in the afterlife. By calling themselves chained up, they are confessing that they are distant from God, which why he is not holy and not free like his peers. The singer says many negative things about themselves, even remarking that they won't be missed when they died, telling the audience that the singer has an extremely low self-esteem. The singer knows that they are separated from God and they are ashamed because of it, causing them to feel worthless. This song is all about spiritual healing. The singer speaks in the past tense, saying that they *were* a fool and saying that they *swore to God* (the present tense of that being "Swear to God"). They say "I was swearing", speaking in the past tense again. This whole song is like a confession of their past sins, the Singer is confessing to their mistakes and admitting that they were, indeed, a fool. Confession is said to be the first step to redemption. The second half of the first verse, where they said that they were Satanic and chained up in the first song, is completely omitted from this song, implying that the singer no longer feels that they are Satanic and chained up, that they have reunited with God and his truth. Finally, in the first verse the singer remarks that they are about to leave Catholic school, telling the audience that time has passed and they have grown older (shocking, I know). I'm calling this to attention because it's important to remember that healing takes time and that healing occurs when we become older and wiser. The first song is about a spoiled little kid from Catholic school who was angry at god, swearing at him because he felt upset. The second song is about an adult who is moving past that dark chapter in their life who has reconnected with God and just, in general, feels better about things.

Im jewish, and the pounding parts reminded me of how on yom kippur people beat themselves on the chest during the recitation of sins as a kind of symbolic punishment. Do catholics have anything similar?
