Thank you for your updates. My mother-in-law was from Latvia. Our first time there was in 2000. Last year we took our daughters to see where their grandmother was born. I use your updates to pass on current events and continue their interest in visiting again.

Slightly disagree, beer is cheap in Germany while in LV it is rather expensive. Good brands like Valmiermuiža or Tervete cost rather 2 Euros per bottle while in GER good brands are 0,85 to 1,20. But on the orther hand LV beers have good quality and what you get for the price is good value. Fair enough to latvijenize the world!

Canada has something like this as well. Unfortunately it is highly bias asking questions related to things that the party or people are advocating for, can remember the term/word, such as affordable child care, instead of something that is important to you, such as military spending. So how does asking me if I support subsidies child care help me choose what party I best align with when I don't have children currently or in the foreseeable future, when I would rather know which party would increase military spending. I might not be making myself clear, but I hope you understand what I am getting at.

The only reason why US, Canada, Australia, Germany etc have rising populations is immigration. Latvian culture and language are strong enough to thrive within a Latvia that embraces high immigration if proper integration polices (focusing on Latvian values & language) were a part of such a process, I believe.
@oisinmaguidhir290228 күн бұрын
I agree that preserving the language and identity of a country is of great importance, but the integration-based solution you describe has failed much more often than it has succeeded (if it has succeeded at all). From what I've seen many immigrants are resistant to give up their old identity and ways, and being surrounded by Europeans, instead of encouraging them to integrate, makes them identify even more strongly with their home countries and more determined to preserve a distinct identity. As for the language issue, I worry even more for Latvia. Immigrants do tend to adopt more widely spoken, more useful languages, such as German and Polish, but it will be a hard sell to convince people with no connection or great love for Latvia to adopt a language with fewer than 2 million speakers. Even the nicest immigrants still see our country as an economy first and a nation second. We have already seen how immigrants to the Baltic states from other former-USSR countries often refuse to use the local language and become part of the existing Russophone communities, and many immigrants would insist on using English or Russian (depending on where they came from). In Wales (which is next to England) there was a big news story about an immigrant family (from India, I think) that was refused to learn Welsh, the local language, and pushed to have their kids be put in English-speaking schools instead. Western countries need to encourage their own people to have more children, discourage or make it more difficult for their people to emigrate from the country and, when necessary, allow some migration from suitable neighbouring countries (perhaps Poland, in Latvia's case). Long live Latvia, from Ireland! 🇱🇻 🇮🇪

@@oisinmaguidhir2902 I'm a Latvian repatriate who grew up in a city where more than 73% of everyone was either born in a different country or had parents born in another country. Your characterisation of immigrants is weird and wrong.

@@bofostudio It's an accurate description of what I see around me. Rejection of the local language, our perspective on local history or our social norms isn't good for a country, even if you think it doesn't happen.

Ice hockey became popular in Latvia in 1930s, but Soviet era Riga Dinamo team and its coach Viktor Tikhonov played a huge part in making it as popular as it now. Also the 1988 Soviet league where Dinamo dud not win, but got to the final. Before Tikhonov in the 70s hockey was definitely less popular than football/soccer which yes, before that was the top sport in Latvia, and also less popular than basketball. But in the Soviet league it was hard for a football club from small country to be successful, so football lost its pre-war popularity in time. Also Tikhonov’s Dinamo rise in the 70s coincided with time when basketball was also not doing that well, which helped hockey’s popularity. So in a way Soviet era is the answer why it is so popular. If not for Soviets, most likely football would still be most popular sport here at least when it comes to domestic competition as it would be hard to compete internationally. And you might say there is still way more money in Latvian football league than in basketball or hockey leagues, it might be Russian oligarch or local Russian businessmen/company money, but still…
@lkrnpkАй бұрын
But I mean, who knows. But ice hockey was also popular in Estonia until it wasn’t and Tikhonov bringing struggling Riga Dinamo team back to top hockey competition and rise of Helmuts Balderis is the difference between the two. And pre independence 1988 was important date too, again coincided with lack of results in basketball at the time

Thanks for your comment! This was one interesting video to research. I really went with a feeling that there’s more to ice hockey than sport in Latvia. I backed it up by the info I got on Reddit, from friends etc. But when I read comments like yours it just makes me so humble and aware that societal things are complex. History and culture are so cool!

I'd say hockey became so popular due to early success and that in turn made it a vehicle of our national expression and kind of fueled our further success consequently engraving the sport into our national identity. Also Role models like Sandis Ozolinš, Artūrs Irbe, Sergejs Žoltoks played their part. Before them Helmuts Balderis (Soviet-Latvian hockey superstar) was someone to look up to. I assume basketball in Lithuania followed similar route. As far as I know Estonia didn't have similar success or traditions in neither Hockey or Basketball.

Nu nezinu, man tas bišķītis, ko kādreiz no Zentas Mauriņas darbiem esmu lasījis, šķita kaut kāds svešāds un auksts. Un tad vēl tā viņas mode iespraust kādu viņasprāt glaunāku vārdu, piemēram, "sirenitāte", ko tie, kas nezin angļu vai varbūt kādu romāņu valodu nemaz īsti nesapratīs. Vai, varbūt, man jāpalasa no viņas kas vairāk. P.S. Johaidī, izrādās, ka Zenta Mauriņa no 1938. līdz 1944. gadam dzīvoja manā Rīgas nostūrī - pavisam netālu no Zasulauka stacijas!

Yes, definitely same agreement. But situation is more complicated. At first - I have seen online posts related Latvian monuments in Russia that are not kept at place so breaking agreement from their side (cannot say for sure is it really like that as I have not done research and I also have not been to Russia at all so not seen real situation). Also victory monument removal was partly a sign that we do not really trust agreements with Russia as Russia broke agreement to not attack Ukraine if they will give up their nuclear weapons that Ukraine did. For that case were added one new law as I remember, that allowed to remove monument of victory. Additionally - monument of victory had some rooms under it that were in pretty terrible state so monument would have fallen in some time anyways.
