I can think of a number of captions for the thumbnail photo. "That fish was THIS big" "I am happy and my hands show it." "What happened? I was juggling and now they're gone..."

I so love that there are comments from up to 7 years ago to a month ago. Christ's call echoes through the years and doesn't rely on trends and people still feel the fire of the spirit burning, thrilled by how Jesus can move and has moved and will continue to do so. Father do it again.

This sounds a bit New Age, Tim. Can you distinguish between this Christian and the New Age "love" from a Being or energy force in the Universe?

One of our problems is being ho hum about it. Find translations and teachers that stimulate you and yes, lectio divina is a fine addition to ones spiritual growth and inward reflection. Began doing daily lectio divina during lent a couple years back. Really helped me to be shown DEEP things by the Holy Spirit.

A false assumption is made here that traditional reading and study of the bible is neither devotional, prayerful, or relational. It is also implied that simply reading Scripture is boring. This couldn't be further from the truth! For many years, I read scripture in a piece-meal manner, waiting for a word to "jump out at me." It was an inefficient and self-focussed way of reading the Bible. I didn't get to know God properly this way. Then, one day, the Holy Spirit convicted me about this. I began to read the whole Bible from beginning to end. The first time through was sometimes hard, but then I discovered something amazing: When each book is read from beginning to end, and the whole Bible from beginning to end, always seeking first to know God, it truly becomes a treasure chest of truth! It is breathtaking how all Scripture fits together! It is incredibly exciting to get to know God this way. Regular study of what the Bible actually says begins to transform our thinking and our behaviour. Through it, the Holy Spirit will set us free from sin. We will also grow in our faith and knowledge of God. It is devotional. It is relational. It is God speaking to us. And it will lead us to prayer and praise. Be careful of spiritualising texts out of context to find mystical hidden and personal meaning. It becomes a Gnostic way of reading the Bible. When the Holy Spirit wants to illuminate the truths of Scripture, he will. He is the best teacher ever! * The Bible bursts into life when we seek to understand the written context of what it actually says. * The Bible bursts into life when we first ask, "What does this teach me about God?" * The Bible bursts into life when we look for Jesus Christ within its pages - all Scripture testifies to him. He is the key to understanding what Scripture means. * The Bible bursts into life when we ask the Holy Spirit to be our teacher and guide us into all truth, helping us to understand what it actually means. When the Holy Spirit illuminates Scripture (as we faithfully read and study it), the Lord will provide comfort, wisdom, guidance, and so much more. It will also cut deeply and convict.

I have been researching the origins of the contemplative prayer movement these past few months, and the more I read, the more concerned I become. VERY CONCERNED. I encourage others to research the origins. And please read the Bible in context. Some of the ancient mystics had some seriously dodgy visions, and they used ascetic pursuits to invoke such mystical visions (sleep deprivation, injurious practices, severe fasting, prolonged isolation, etc.). Anthony of Egypt frequently had demonic and perverse visions (as did other Desert Fathers and Mothers). Ignatius of Loyola received his spiritual exercises through visions of the Virgin Mary. He also had a vision of a SERPENT that delighted his soul. There are records stating how Teresa of Avila would sometimes levitate while meditating. Some authors believe she was influenced by Jewish Kabbalah (which is occultic). The modern method of contemplative prayer (also known as centering prayer) can be traced back to three monks in the 1970s (Thomas Keating, William Meninger & Basil Pennington). These monks were not shy about describing their interfaith explorations. They attended Buddhist Zen retreats, where they learnt meditation techniques. They were also taught Transdencental meditation techniques by a Hindu. Keating attended a Sufi retreat at a multifaith centre in the 1980s, where he meditated for 6 hours a day for two weeks. This experience helped him formulate how he would teach contemplative prayer to others. These three monks were also greatly influenced by Thomas Merton, who was deeply involved in interfaith spirituality. All of these monks believed that Christ (a spark of pure divinity) is inside every person and that no person has ever been separated from God. They taught that to know God, people need to use meditation to go within themselves, connect with the divine, and awaken to this "truth."" According to them, sin doesn't separate people from God, only ignorance. This is nothing more than the ancient heresy of Gnosticism repackaged. It is a false Christ and a false gospel. Much more could be said that is alarming about the origins of contemplative spirituality. My plea is for Christians to search the Scriptures and study them in context). There is no Biblical basis for meditative practises such as going within oneself, mantra words, breath prayers, visualisation, etc. These techniques are, however, found in Eastern religions and the occult. Never in the Bible. Teachers who say contemplative prayer is Biblical are twisting Scripture. Jesus told us not to pray like the pagans who use meaningless repetition. He also said to talk to the Father, who is in Heaven. When Jesus prayed, he lifted his head up to the heavens. He never looked within himself to commune with the Father. To come to the Father with childlike faith through Jesus Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit is all that is needed. The deepest and highest form of prayer is simply to talk to the Lord. He wants to hear all about our needs, cares, and joys. Pour them out to him! (Ps 62:8).

I wish so much you guys would talk about how we differentiate between new age meditation and this kind of prayer you are describing. I want to trust what you guys are sharing but as someone who practiced Transcendental Meditation in new age, it has been so confusing sorting through that. I believed in TM that I was experiencing God- but I was not in Christ, so it could not have been. Is it possible this “presence” one encounters in this space is not “the presence of God” but more just the presence of stillness? If it is an encounter with God that would make Christianity’s view of God just ONE of the ways to truth- and not THE way, THE truth, THE life. so many religions have this same experience, so… what’s really going on here? It seems that to embrace this practice as a Christian your theology would radically shift to universalism. It would be so helpful to hear someone from the Bridgetown crew speak about this because it’s so confusing for people following along with your ministries & trying to understand 🙏🏻

I am 67 years old, have been a follower of Jesus since I was 8. These are new spiritual practices for me. This episode brought me to tears. Discovering this new/old way of being with Jesus has connected so deeply to my heart. “Your gentleness and love invites me to be” I can sit with Jesus for a long time and feel deeply connected to his love and gentleness in a way I never have. And, this breath prayer invites me to be gentle and loving too. I am finding freedom in being loved and in turn, loving others, no matter what, with the love of Jesus. Thank you!
