Have you seen the word serif in typography? like when choosing a font you have families like sans-serif. I don't really know its origin but I guess the Japanese serifu is related to that.

Pretty good list, I wish some-one told me how to politely say "no, thank you" before I went to Tokyo, as it's a surprisingly useful phrase. Small error: 0:55 I think it's the wrong slide being shown.

its more like "repeat the first consonant of the symbol infront of the っ (small tsu)。 for example, in かっこいい (kakkoii), the っこ identifies that you should repeat the first consonant of the next letter (in this example, k in ko is repeated to be kko)

Why only japanese characters and not western style letters, so you know which characters correspond with which sound?
@thejapanshop28 күн бұрын
If you are wanting to learn Japanese, I highly recommend staying away from romaji (romanized Japanese) since it isn't "real" Japanese and can slow your progress. However, if you can read hiragana, you can read everything in this video. Good news is you can learn hiragana in about 2 weeks or less. Here are our free lesson pages: thejapanesepage.com/learn-hiragana/ This story is upper beginner to lower intermediate and may be a bit difficult, but once you learn hiragana, you can use our graded readers like this free story here: thejapanesepage.com/clay-is-lost-a-beginners-hiragana-reader/

Thanks a lot! Why is "ringo" written in katakana (in the sentence itself, not in the explanation below)? Are both options correct?
@thejapanshop29 күн бұрын
Short answer, yes. It is usually written in katakana リンゴ but can be written in hiragana or even in kanji (林檎 rare). It's really a matter of preference for the writer.

it is "horse" vs "deer". The story goes, somebody recognize a deer as a horse, so he is a fool. So that's why "horse" "deer" means a fool. But there is more to this story. People usually won't mistake a deer for a horse, so what is the real deal? It was in the past, a royal official in some dynasty was gaining power, and he wanted to say anything and see if people just say he was right. So one day, he pointed at some deer and said it was a horse. Some other state officials said, "no, it is a deer". But some "smart" officials said, "oh yes, it is a beautiful deer". So, that powerful official knew who is "smart enough" to say a deer is a horse, to be a team with him. It goes the same way in the current world. If the CEO or director or manager in a corporation said something that is stupid or unfair, there are people who'd point out it is unfair, but the number can be very small. Most people may keep silent, or say that the manager made the perfect decision, and it works the same way as "pointing to a deer and say it is a horse"
