Yeah, supposedly they're going away when those refurbished 2006 gilligs get finished, which was supposed to be in May.

Those aren’t the axles - those are the rear dual tires with snow/mud tread. Some of them get retreaded like that, quite a few of those Gilligs have that. I always love that sound when they put that tread on.

I see. That definitely makes more sense. Especially with that wavy sound. Is it the way they get retreaded that causes the sound? Or just the fact that it's retreaded at all?

It depends on the tread patterns. Bandag co. usually retreads them in three different patterns, but the tires brand new are Firestone City Transport and their original tread. I think they retread them to save money and is more cost-efficient.

It’s so strange how these XDE60’s have the BAE series 200E rather than the 300…and the center axle is powered, so maybe that’s why.

Yea, probably. I thought it was just quieter in the back because of some new noise insulation stuff but then I found out about the center axle, which you could tell because of the bulging black covers and slight floor raise on the center wheels inside.

I wish San Francisco had these buses it would be cool to see the city have all New Flyer buses, but the city has some routes that cannot be served by 35 or 40 foot buses

San Francisco has similar XDE40s, but in SF MUNI fashion, have sliding windows and silver frames(and are probably maintained much worse)
