I have a similar Hamilton to this. It runs but was put threw the washing machine and the hands were broken off. It needs a service new hands and possible crystal replacement. Do you provide this service?
Ive been trying to service an Elgon that has a near identical movement to this. What set of screwdrivers did you use for this? All of my screwdrivers slip...
@redvitiswatches14 күн бұрын
It was a budget set back then, and I had to reshape tips all the time. Switched to bergeon shortly after, the nickel-plated brass ones. They are fantastic, have done many similar Elgins since then. Screw slot widths can vary quite a lot with different watchmakers.

what is the use of the extra screw on the barrel bridge?
@redvitiswatchesАй бұрын
I am not certain about the part number, but from my copy of "The Illustrated manual of American Watch movements" the most likely one is the shop lever, part 3046. When the watch is decased, it will be in the setting position. By turning the blued screw of the shop lever, watch will move to the winding position. I normally don't make use of this part, since I can do the same thing with a bench key to push in the setting lever.

Could you have also put the fork in before the train of wheels so you don't have to feed it under the centre wheel?
@redvitiswatchesАй бұрын
It is a matter of preference. Pallet-last lets the wheels rotate first so I know if they are in the pivots. Pallet-first and the wheels won't rotate so you would judge by inspection of pivots in the jewels.

Great video with very informative information especially the use of balsa wood as a buffing tool. Can you tell me what you soaked the plate in to remove the dirt and rust as it came up really nice. Thanks again, appreciate the tips😀👍
@redvitiswatches3 ай бұрын
Thanks Alantinker9879. That was a fun project for me, so pleased how well the watch runs now. The rust removal soak doesn't clean the plate of old oil, so first I cleaned with standard watch cleaner solution and pegwood. The rust removal soak was next - I prefer not to disclose what I used hope you can understand why. Rust removal is a complicated subject, very dependent on chemistry of metal or alloy and/or the coating.

That is an awesome incredibly lovely watch both inside and out! What do you think that watch would have cost when it was brand new in 1895?

Around $50 not including a case, or about $1500-2000 adjusting for inflation.

Great video, it answered my questions as I'm about to try installing my first "T" end mainspring. I'm wondering, after winding the mainspring into the drum and having left that little bit out of the winder, if it wouldn't be a little easier to hold the winder in one hand and the barrel in the other, and then position the T-end of the mainspring into the barrel and then move the barrel closer to the winder so that it sandwiches the mainspring end against the inside of the barrel while you then fully insert the winder into the barrel? Basically, instead of having to grab the mainspring end with tweezers and maneuver it into the barrel, if you couldn't instead maneuver it in by using the barrel to gather it up, press it against the winder, and then finish inserting the winder all the way into the barrel? If that makes sense :)
@redvitiswatches3 ай бұрын
That is a good way yes. Either holding the barrel or having in flat on the bench, and inserting the spring in, t end first, at a slight angle. I've used that several times and do prefer it over tweezers now. -RedVitis

What did you use to soak the plate in, great video
@redvitiswatches4 ай бұрын
Thanks Davidlondon! I make it a practice not to disclose the cleaning fluids I use. Hope you can understand why. Rust removal is complicated, and the method depends on the metal or alloy, type of part and other factors, and is a bit more involved in most cases than a soak. I'd be happy to discuss further if you PM me at my instagram account- there is a link at my KZfaq site.

Hey Red, thanks for showing off that beautiful movement! I am working on a similar (956) movement that also has the "hook" attached to the long blued screw under the barrel bridge. Around 17:28, you mention that it has something to do with winding the watch when uncased. I was wondering if you have any more information on the name of that part or how exactly it is used.
@redvitiswatches7 ай бұрын
You are welcome mdimbler! I am not certain about the part number, but from my copy of "The Illustrated manual of American Watch movements" the most likely one is the shop lever, part 415 for open face watches and part 547 for hunting movements. When the watch is decased, it will be in the setting position. By turning the blued screw of the shop lever, watch will move to the winding position. I normally don't make use of this part, since I can do the same thing with a bench key to push in the setting lever.

There is another good thing about closing the pivot holes and adjusting them with the broaching tool, the brass gets hardened by the dragging and pulling by the broaching and therefore works much better as a bushing 😊

What's the best way to do this for the minute hand which doesn't have a tube?
@redvitiswatches8 ай бұрын
The method in the videos applies to sec hands with a tube. If there is no tube, it may be possible to close a hole using a staking set if hand is brass; however, minute hands in pocket watches often are hardened steel, and not so readily modified.

I have a cracked chrono seconds hand and itnis therefore loose. When the chrono is activated and stopped it does not reset to 12. One tick over. I’ll try the method you used. But since mine is cracked, I may have to also laser weld it. Btw, do you have an second seller to recommend for hands? My watch is neo vintage so ball park 2005. But the hand seems like one they might be found on other watches as well. Thanks
@redvitiswatches9 ай бұрын
There are several sellers of new and NOS parts for old watches. The same retailers you'll find recommended in watch repair forums. Finding an exact match takes patience. I once purchased a seconds hand for an early 1900s watch, and tube was too small, so knowing how to both open and close are necessary skills to learn. Then again repairing an old part is satisfying, and I wish you well. -RedVitis
