First off, a wonderful layout, very different to others I have seen. My question regards maintenance. With considerable table space used for the stunning scenery how is the job of maintaining the layout done? Thanks in advance.

Didn't realize that Retford had a crossing. My memories are of a high and low level. Was this a track modification in the 70's??

Greetings. I an fairly new to KZfaq, and I have just found your videos. I've watched all three. I have seen articles in the magazine's about your railway and was impressed by its scale. To see it in motion, and brining it to life, it is even more amazing. I would be happy to think of it as Pendon MKII. It looks to have the same purpose, to record a slice of history. To put a railway into its scenic proportion gives it so much life. I went to Pendon first in 1973. I came away dreaming of a scale mile of model railway. Never achieved it sadly, but I compensate by enjoying the modelling of others who can do more than I. I have enjoyed club modelling and exhibiting though. I hope it has brought you as much joy to build and play, as it has for us followers to watch. Thank you for sharing.

Great work so far. The track layout is very interresting and also very realistic. But what scale is "EM gauge"? never heard of that....
@melvynwoodman5787 Жыл бұрын
Scale is 4mm to the foot (same as oo) gauge is 18.2mm instead of 16.5mm to provide a more accurate representation of 4feet8.5inches. wheel standards and flangeways remain as oo standards which are still coarser than scale.

Where does the tunnel go there?
@middlesexmariner10 ай бұрын
I'm a driver of the diesel at Fawley, I was the first female to be passed out as a driver in the 44 year history of Fawley Hill Railway 5 years ago. As for the tunnel, it depends how old you are when you ask the question, if you are 10 or there abouts, we will tell you it comes out at the Sainsbury's car park in Henley...!!! actually it is about 65 yards long into the hill and we use it to store valuable wagon stock such as the Sharks, and the 1/3rd coach during the winter. We also need the tunnel to pass a long train past the platform points to change them from yard to hill.

I'm a little curious; what was the first coach behind the tender of that LNER-liveried "Sir Sam Fay" class?
@DJRailways3 жыл бұрын
That would be a GCR Barnum!
@TallboyDave3 жыл бұрын
@@DJRailways Interesting; would pre-grouping coaches like those roamed all that much in LNER or BR days, or would they have primarily remained on their former routes?
@DJRailways3 жыл бұрын
@@TallboyDave The Great Central Railway did cross the East Coast mainline at Retford over the flat crossing, which is now the low level part of the station, so Barnums were a common sight.

This is a fantastic layout and testament to your Grandfather's years of hard work. I have lived in Retford all my life and although i'm not old enough to have known the tracks as they are here, I am still a rail enthusiast and find the bygone years fascinating. I would also like to add there is a Facebook group called Retford Memories which has many pictures and notes about the town including many photos of the railway in the area throughout the years. I'm sure whoever is continuing the build on this layout would find it an excellent resource. Thanks once again to your Grandfather for his great work.

@battlefield3rd884 жыл бұрын
So exciting to see expresses run through at scale speed! particularly over that beautifully crafted point and crossing work (as well as a variety of other speeds, of course.) An aspect so often (I humbly think) missing at shows where everything seems to run at such a uniformly slow speed, even on larger layouts - maybe to save wear or minimize risk of derailments, perhaps.
