An absolutely gorgeous guitar! While it deserves to be played a lot, if it was in my hands the thought of scratching it would hold me back. Good thing is I can't afford one of those, so no worries :)

Thanks James. In September I am looking at evolving into a small membership model that includes a monthly podcast and some live video coaching for anyone who is interested in pursuing this type of work as a hobby or as a profession. A dedicated StringTech Workstation hub is also in the works. This will allow all of the StringTech owners world-wide to connect and exchange ideas and tips pertaining to there own use of these Workstations, as we celebrate the 6th ( GPS Model ) and 7th ( XLT Model ) generation of the TechDeck Workstations..... and how these tools and accessories factor in to their own home workshops / music stores / and touring duties. Stay Tuned ... ;^ ) ! MMcC

This is a lot of work. Why don't acoustic guitars use adjustable bridges (like electric guitars), or floating/adjustable bridges like mandolins?
@StringTechWorkstations
@StringTechWorkstations 14 күн бұрын
Fair enough questions. The adjustable electric guitar bridges are an entirely different animal. The "adjustability" is unnecessary on an acoustic guitar ... once it is calibrated for the exact string tuning and scale length; there is rarely any need to "re-adjust". IF any adjustment is needed, the values at the focal points on the saddle can be adjusted slightly. Floating bridges are used on most Arch-Top guitars .... but ... the way the the " flat top " guitars are designed; the bridge needs to be attached to the top, to " drive" the soundboard. Cheers ! mike , what's your most common glue for string nut ?
@XHuntinatorX
@XHuntinatorX 19 күн бұрын
In your opinion, what is the correct order of operations for an acoustic guitar setup? Everyone seems to do it differently. Also, are there specific values that you are shooting for in terms of string heights at different frets? It looks like you have a system that is based more on intonation rather than specific values, that to me, makes more sense.
@StringTechWorkstations
@StringTechWorkstations 18 күн бұрын
I definitely work on intonation first. There are more variables that most people recognize. But the end result is a guitar that plays smoothly AND stays in tune.

A friend came to me with his 10 yr-old Taylor for a setup and renovation last Fall and I feared it was going to need a neck reset and/or height adjustment of the saddle to get it right. I had never worked on a Taylor before and was hesitant to take the job because I know what a pain it is to detach, adjust and reset a glued neck on a normal acoustic, and then there will always be some remedial finish work around the repair afterward. Mike clued me in on how this bolted, taper shimmed, dry-fit neck joint works on Taylors. I had no idea they had bolted necks until then. The joint is so tight and well-engineered that you probably wouldn't know by just looking because the visible joint cracks are so miniscule and regular. I calculated how far I had to repitch the neck, carefully sanded the tapers of the spacer shims and nailed the neck angle first time without even having to mess with the saddle height. That was somewhat lucky to hit it exactly the first time but if you're careful you can. Happy me, happy customer, happy guitar. If you're the registered original owner of a Taylor they'll do this neck reset free under lifetime warranty but if you're not, they charge $200 for it and believe me, it's not really that difficult. Thanks again for your insider tips and advice, Mike!

Thanks William. I have been using this method for years.The nut wasn't quite as reckless as it seems.... Lol ! ... there is a strip of brass shim stock under the masking tape, at the leading edge of the nut shelf. Stay tuned ... a 1950 J-50 restoration coming up soon. I now know by sight ... how much adjustment is needed to line it up at the nut. I don't glue the nut in until the values are cut and verified. This allows me to take it out and free-hand it under my Benq bench light. MMcC

Thanks a lot Mike!! I got a few weeks ago, but we went on vacation to Monterey CA the day after it arrived . I'm just about to use it today. I had to finish up a couple other guitars. Can't wait to see how it works. I'm reslotting a cheap Yamaha FG 331 that we got in with another buy as a freebie, but it really needed a neck reset but not really wanting to do that for what the guitar is worth, and it's going off to another player friend anyway for zero money, I shaved the bridge down a bit and will reslot the saddle slot.

The action looks incredibly high!
@StringTechWorkstations
@StringTechWorkstations Ай бұрын
The action is exactly where the customer requested. Buttery smooth to play and perfectly in tune from the first fret to the last. Most people get confused on the fact that the " action " is not the distance from the string to the wood of the fingerboard. It is the distance from the string to the top of the fret crown. This customer does NOT like the action too close. Much like Jeff Beck .... the action should be set to allow you to "dig-in" and really get a grip on the string for those bends / hammer-ons / vibrato / pull-offs and all of the fingerboard gymnastics that commonly come into play. Once the action has been set to the customers' preference, THEN all of the other adjustments will follow suite.

The recently produced "high end" Epiphones are quite excellent. I have the 1959 Les Paul and honestly the only complaint I have is the crappy fret wire material. Definitely not as hard as the Gibson stuff. So at some point, if I can find a luthier willing to risk their tools and sanity, I'm gonna get SS frets installed in her.
