I was there. My buddies and I went with a cooler of ice cold beer and no tickets. We were a ragtag bunch of young desert rats and we tried to bribe our way in with beer. The guy at the gate was laughing at us for coming out without tickets. I said we spend all our money on premix, sparkplugs and knobbies but we just had to be here. Right answer! He let us all in. Thanks bro wherever you are!

Never has been as exciting or the same since the 4-strokes took over. They should have limited them to 350 and we would still see the 2-strokes.
@jeffcombs29502 күн бұрын
I just saw an interview with Davey Coombs where he said, in hindsight, they should have went 150/300cc for the 4T displacement allotments instead of the 250/450cc they allowed.

Was listening to the Whiskey Throttle show interview with Jeff Stanton. Stanton said it was this race that convinced him to retire. He said there was a lot of take out moves going on, but he wouldn't mention who was the racer, and he did say he didn't want to drop any names. In the main, they don't show it, but as they show Stanton trying to bang levers back into place after a fall, Eckman says he had a brush with Emig. Maybe Emig was the straw that broke the camel's back?
@yamac48825 күн бұрын
Yeah, it was Emig in particular this night but it was just the way riders were conducting themselves in general around this time that made him realize he was the old guard and this was a new era. Fro made the decision to leave the sport easy this night though.

Stanton was never really one of my favorites back then but dude is legend and the epitome of a factory Honda guy from that era. Made Bayle cry uncle that day which I don't think I've ever seen before lol

I think we can all say how much we appreciate these great riders of the 90's and didn't know the caliber of greatness we were witnessing. I mean McGrath, Stanton, LaRocco to name just few. 30 years later, still common household names in the industry. Love watching these old MX races. Dave Despain & Art Eckman were born to be announcers.
