I'm six minutes into this this and no menton of Latino music in "Americana"/Folk. Respect to Pokey, but if you're going to talk about the roots of American music, Latin music is right up there.

What Susan Polgar didn't mention was that she and her two sisters were taught chess as an experiment in education by her father, Laszio Polgar, who was an educational psychologist, as well as a chess teacher. He wrote at least two books on chess that I know of. He is also considered a pioneer theorist in child rearing. Susan's and her sisters' introduction to chess was not them finding some chess pieces scattered in a draw as she portrays in this video. It was an intentional experiment pushed onto them by their father, an experiment that at the time was criticized as being inappropriate to subject to a child at such a young age. Still, the experiment, despite its detractors, seems to have been successful. Indeed, Laszio Polgár's experiment with his daughters has been called "one of the most amazing experiments in the history of human education". Susan herself has authored an excellent series of books to teach chess. I have the greatest respect for her as a chess player. I just wish she would be more honest about how she was introduced to the game.

Listen people! Music is music. Those who produce it are amazing. However, nothing dictates music. It's like beauty. It's in the eye (or the ear) of the beholder. Don't over complicate any form of visual, audial or any other form of art.

In my opinion, if everything you do/see/hear is "old" - it's most definitely "retro." You could always add ONE new thing, an instrument or shoes or whatever, that is not from 1943. That's being original/creative.

man in 2022, this guy's words couldn't be more true.. really ahead of his time in his thinking, especially the part where he speaks of embracing our past and celebrating the things we've overcome instead of letting our past be our downfall.

Pokey has a good ear for music and understanding the cultural heritage paramount here. I've also got an ear for older music, the more produced it sounds the less I'm interested, the compression used in old recordings is like a main-line to my brain, bands I've played in all share a period in time but all have created new songs to be a part of this rich tapestry, I hear the roots of music in everything I listen to but not often thrilled in this modern sounding world

I love Pokey as a musician, a songwriter, and as an entertainer. But the more I learn about him, read about him, etc...the more I realize I love him as an (accidental) educator and as a humanist. I love that he is always learning and sharing his experience. Proud to support him any way I can.
