I love the idea of going to a competency based examination educational institution like University of Maine at Presque Isle for a good and decent education to get one's initial Bachelor's degree completion done with much lower cost and also done at an accelerated rate and pace saving one's opportunity cost savings.

I have a question. If I'm a foreigner and want to continue my studies in the US I can't physically come to the university and prove that I am eligible for these credits. Can't I just simply ask the university what courses of my major can be credited through Sofia or other third party sources?

I think CLEPing out is a good idea if you've taken the course, have some familiarity with the subject matter, or the exam is notoriously easy. I wouldn't try to learn a subject for the first time, then try to take a CLEP exam. If you want to go to a school that's a little more prestigious than the popular hackable colleges, it has definitely been my experience that you will run into roadblocks when it comes to CLEP and Sophia. Most will accept CLEP in some capacity, but most will not accept Sophia at all. In fact, none of the traditional/brick and mortar colleges/universities with an online presence I researched accept Sophia, and I researched A LOT. That being said, out of the schools that are competency based, an overwhelming majority accept both. Determine your goals, do your due diligence and make absolute sure which school you want to attend before paying out any money. I paid for Sophia, only to switch to a school that doesn't accept their credit because I started researching after the fact. Don't be me lol An employer only knows the school you graduated from. They don't know how you went about it. I wouldn't let that stop me from using CLEP and/or Sophia for credit.

Wow. I have never heard of this University. I found a school in Florida that has no reviews and no one has heard of also. Amazing. I will stick with a school that accepts govt loans. There are 2 accrediting agencies for RN programs. National is important as some places don't hire without that accrediting. Some schools want only accredited program applicants for the Bachelors. So if you have a ASN, you will need to get accreditation from ACEN or CCNe to get into a BSN program. A Distance Ed accreditation is not good for a nursing program.

If it is degree hacking that you are talking about, meaning getting a college degree without doing the effort to learn the things your college degree requires, then University of the People is not for you. but if you want a college degree and develop tge expertise required, then I absolutely recommend University of the People. I am on my final term of Bachelor of Computer Science. I enrolled in 2021 during Covid Lockdowns. The Bachelor of Computer Science requires 120 units. Each course is 3 units. So 40 courses in all. Without financial aid, the final test fee is $120. Multiplied by 40. That is $4800. Students can apply for financial aid. So this fee is reduced based on the lide circumstances. In all my courses, all our instructors have PhD and we can direct message them if we have any difficulty. How is that for direct mentoring? They also teach in regular and famous universities and/or have extensive professional work in the US, India, etc. It is amazing to discuss and share with classmates all around the globe in our weekly discussion posts, and write our weekly learning journals that our instructors personally review and give feedback. I have female classmates living in Afghanistan who study for their college degree in the secrecy of their homes. Muslims, Christians, Asians, Arabs, Jews, Americans, Jews, Africans have been my classmates. So learning has become an awesome experience. The lessons are not a walk in the park. What I can say for those who want a college degree that represents real quality eaducation, I can say University of the People is worth it. And for $4800 for the whole 4 year degree, your school fees would not sink you in student loan debt. Each term is 9 weeks. A student can enroll a maximum of 2 courses per term. If the student gets into the Dean's list, he or she may enroll up to 4 courses. This is how one can get a degree sooner. As a graduating student, I can say that University of the People education is competitive and the real deal.

So you took my transcript from Excelisor post on Reddit. Those were extra credits not needed for my degree plan (Excelsiors price was the reasoning for not attending) . Sophia doesn't show at umpi transcript only says ACE credit. I took all my (over 25 classes) Sophia credits to UMPI and got my degree in 7 months......along with starting my Masters degree at WGU. I think you tend to forget that taking other tests takes time and sometimes money. My sons A.A was 17k at a local community college right after highschool lol My B.A 4k plus sophia meaning 4100 😂 So, hate all you want but at the end of the day Sophia helped me get my degree along with countless others. ( Quick look. My grades were from 2002 from that transcript. The fact they gave me any credit was a miracle)

Thanks so much for your thoughts. I mean no offense here and I have a ton of respect for what you've done. I've seen people get degrees with a lot of Sophia credits. And I genuinely hope your degree makes all the difference in your career. If a UMPI degree with lots of Sophia credits has given you what you need, you should absolutely be proud of yourself! And you're absolutely right that Sophia is cheaper than paying tuition out of pocket. But that's not the solution I'm suggesting. I've helped people get full Bachelor's Degrees as fast as 3 months with zero 3rd party credits, and zero out of pocket. I just feel obligated to warn people of the risks because there are other solutions that I love so much more. I had no idea those transcripts were yours but they are a great example that if you don't take the correct Sophia classes that match up with your major they simply don't count towards your degree. But definitely not a knock on you. It sounds like you found a way to use those credits at UMPI. Again, no offense intended here. I have so much respect for the work you've done to make your life better! I'd also like to add, you've been so vocal and awesome on my channel. I'd hate to see hard feelings because of a difference in opinion about Sophia. Please shoot me an email if you have any issues with my using that reddit image. ([email protected])

@@midnite1235 First off... congrats on your success. So awesome! I'm so glad that Sophia worked for you. I'm assuming you did your research and mapped things out correctly ahead of time. Fantastic work on your end! My issue with Sophia isn't the tool itself. I just see it mis-used so often. I see so many students get excited about the ease of Sophia, and blindly earn a bunch of credits... then transfer into school and the credits don't get accepted because they didn't map things out properly. Or.. they decide to get a Liberal Studies major just because any credits are accepted... but in situations where a Liberal Studies isn't giving them the career boost they thought they'd get. I think there just isn't much awareness that there are other paths, and you still don't need to pay tuition out of pocket. I've seen 3 month bachelor's degrees with zero Sophia credits in career niche majors... all while not paying tuition out of pocket. I know I let loose in this video... the Sophia horror stories were on my mind. I promise I'll do another video in the future and show more love to Sophia users. And I'll include how to use Sophia the right way so people can avoid the common mistakes. Thanks so much for your thoughts! Please know... I'm not knocking on you for using Sophia. I enrolled in the University of the People during the 2021 pandemic, and I will be completing my BS in Computer Science degree this August 2024. Each class has a maximum of 30 students, and our instructors are PhD lecturers from well-known universities in the US, India, and other countries. One can earn a credible college diploma from a US university debt-free. The total cost without financial aid is $120 per 3-unit course, and the Computer Science degree requires 120 units. So, the complete curriculum costs $4800 (40 x $120). There are additional minimal costs, such as the application fee and the diploma certification, which I haven't delved into yet. Proctored exams for a number of key courses require a proctor. There is an independent paid proctor service, but this can be replaced with an in-person proctor like a pastor, teacher, or librarian who is vetted by the UoPeople administration. Student internships are also available if the student takes the initiative to explore the resources provided by the university's Moodle LMS. This is why I say a US resident can earn a credible university diploma without incurring a mountain of student debt. UoPeople taught me how to be a self-learner. Every week, we submit a discussion post that we peer-review with classmates and the instructor, written assignments graded by three classmates under the instructor's oversight, and learning journals reviewed and commented on by our instructors. Our submissions undergo a plagiarism check that flags portions considered plagiarized by the system, ensuring academic integrity. These assignments account for 70% of the grade, with the remaining 30% coming from two graded quizzes and the final exams. All submissions must be in academic writing format with APA in-text citations and a reference list. Our weekly lessons include required readings, primarily from OpenStax textbooks and other web references. UoPeople library provides free access to JSTOR reference journals and ProQuest Central bookstore. UoPeople has truly taught me to be a self-learner. I can reach out to my PhD instructors for mentorship and have a global network of classmates, many of whom are experienced working professionals. We are given our own @my.uopeople.edu student email ID, which I used to get free student access to corporate training and resources from Figma, Google Cloud, Tableau, Qlik, AWS, Alibaba Cloud, JetBrains, Oracle, and more. Our Computer Science department partnered with Oracle Academy, allowing me to take free Oracle courses using the student account provided by our instructor. It is an amazing experience to read discussion posts from an Afghan woman classmate studying in secret at her home in Afghanistan, a US mother sharing her experience working in a cancer facility, and a Cambodian father working remotely as a software developer. While the training is not as rigorous as a traditional university-I have studied for four years for a BS in Mathematics-the learning outcome is greater for me because of the self-learning push in a global setting. I can reach out to doctorate professors, learn global perspectives from my classmates around the world, access corporate training through my student credentials, and utilize academic resources from the UoPeople library. I also attend occasional webinars by UoPeople, given by PhD professors and attended by a global student body. So, I guess this is inside information rather than uninformed impressions. My @my.uopeople.edu student email comes with the full suite of licensed Microsoft Office 365, enabling me to use productivity tools like MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, SharePoint, Sway, Engage, Power Apps, Planner, Visio, Delve, Forms, Lists, Calendar, To Do, Whiteboard, Outlook, and other apps.

This is my transcript of records without the grades. Regular students can take up to 2 courses (6 units) per term. Each term is 9 weeks long. Students with higher GPAs can take up to 4 courses (12 units). I achieved a 3.92 GPA, which allowed me to take 4 courses in some terms. From this actual transcript, it can be seen that the curriculum is balanced, comprehensive, and the computer science courses are updated. I have already completed the Certificate for Network and Application Security. After this term, I can complete the requirements for the BS in Computer Science degree program. However, I plan to take the elective course on Artificial Intelligence so that I can also earn my Certificate in Data Science. Regarding your comment on why University of the People has certificate programs, an Associate Degree, and a Bachelor of Science Degree: If I could do things all over again, I would study the curriculum requirements to possibly complete the Associate Degree requirements after two years, the Certificate in Network and Application Security and Certificate in Data Science after three years, and complete the Bachelor of Science degree as well. One can incrementally earn academic credentials for employability and job promotion. For example, you can earn an Associate Degree after 1 and a half years, a Certificate in Data Science and a Certificate in Network and Application Security after 2 and a half years, and a Bachelor of Computer Science degree in 3 to 4 years. In my case, I have completed the required courses for the Certificate in Network and Application Security, but I missed taking the Artificial Intelligence course for the Certificate in Data Science. So, after August, when I have completed the Bachelor of Computer Science requirements, I hope to take the course on Artificial Intelligence to also get the Certificate in Data Science. But it's going to depend on a number of factors. If you're serious about it.. shoot me an email and I'll see if I can help you map out a path. ([email protected])

For all the international students I recommend checking out Open University. I believe it is originally started in the UK and now there is universities all over the world such as Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain, Netherlands, etc

Thanks for the suggestion. Is this school completely self paced? And what is their tuition like?

@@9monthcollegegrad-ryansway671 based on what I read it was 100% competency based but I believe you listed Phoenix University as a school that claims they are competency based but they cap how many classes you do in x amount of months. For cost wise I saw it ranging from $1500 USD a semester or year for Open University Maylasia for example and I think $4500 on the high end.

I attended WGU. They're amazing... But it does depend on which major you're choosing. If you need help finding the right path, shoot me an email. I'm happy to help ([email protected]).
